There are a million theories but this one makes no sense. Smith wasn't involved with the free mason well after the BOM was published and the church as already setup.

The majority of Mormons in Utah are white. Therefore you can trace their ancestry back to Europe. England, Germany, Belgium, Wales...

Recently there has been an increase in the hispanic population of Utah Mormons.
 
Also Joseph received the gun earlier that day from a visitor.There are also reports that the mob was scared off by thunder and lighting right after Smith was killed.

There are a lot of Pacific Islanders as well: Tongan, Samoan, etc.
