I wasn't sure how to answer because I pronounce certain things differently now than I did growing up. I also use different terms.
I assume many of us do.. at least those that have moved around a bit.

Anyway, hats off to Harvard for their linguistics/dialects study. I chose to consistently answer the questions the way I would have now vs. today and my three cities were Louisville, Lexington, and Nashville. They nailed it.

Now I may go back and do it again and answer in today's terms.. could be interesting because I've lived most everywhere.
 
^^^^^ Did you have words for most of them? I had to click "we don't have a word for that" on a lot of them. But yeah, it matched the areas I grew up in perfectly so I guess that's what I was supposed to click. I've never been to Boise though.
 
Yeah.. I had words for all but one (can't remember).

I was surprised to a question about a little grey bug that rolls up when u touch it.. haha.
We call those roly polys.
 
My areas for high matches were Boston, Miami, and some of Kansas. I apparently use unusual word choices.

Ages 4 months - 4: Hawaii
Ages 4-8: Davenport, IA
Ages 9-18, 22-24, 43-now: St. Louis, MO or nearby
Ages 18-21, 25-42: Southwestern Ohio (Dayton/Cincinnati)

Wow. UGLI went to college in MO and Louisville's just down the road from Cinci.
We may be related or smth.
 
It told me SLC, Fresno, CA and Stockton, CA.

I guess potato bug is very SLC. My mom was from MO/AR and called them pill bugs

Everyone's related, if you go back far enough. However, all of my great-grandparents were immigrants who settled in the area of Davenport.
 
Once in Cancun when I was young and hadn't drank much, this guy at a beach bar kept ordering "Roman Coke" so I asked him what's in a Roman Coke. He gave me the you're a dumbass answer and I never found out where he was from. Anyone know what part of the engrish world calls rum rome? British pirates from southern whales maybe?
 
I did it three times, got some different questions each time, and got completely different results, other than all of my results are west of the mississippi. But I did get California results twice, and one test I took I got 3 cities in Arizona. I got Salt Lake City once, but apparently if you say "potato bug" then it automatically pegs you for SLC.

But it kind of makes sense. I lived in Phoenix for a year or so right out of high school, which could be pretty formative for language at that age. We lived in Portland and Vancouver for a while, and my wife is from Pasco Washington, and one of the Cities I got was Seattle. We have spent a lot of time in California, and I got Stockton and LA on different tests. So I guess you pick up different things at different times.

For all those from Utah did you pronounce "been" as "bin" or "ben"?












I would bet on "bin".
