Spurs Doing What Jazz Should be Doing

Late to the discussion here but yeah… smart teams realize they have to get out of the middle one way or another. We aren’t in the middle yet… but will be there as soon as next season. Preemptive selling off our guys for PREMIUM draft capital (unprotected picks) helps you ensure the process is successful and you don’t end up in purgatory. After a few years in the middle SA realizes it’s easier to tank their way to the top than hit the next Giannis or Jokic.

Yeah people forget that we had the best record in the NBA last season, lol. Even this year we won 49 games and were a Bojan buzzer beater away from forcing a game 7 against Dallas.

We also seem to forget we were a .500 team and lost one key player (Ingles) and are likely to lose one more to age and regression (Conley) and we will have a new coach which could easily go the wrong way.

At some point we need to consider the season we had the best record as pretty fluky. Shooting was at an all time high… arenas were empty… tons of games missed due to Covid. Having as many shooters and having the type of offense we do that takes a ton of threes it makes a lot of sense that empty arenas favored us a bit. All you need is a small edge to change your season by a few games. Teams also weren’t practicing so the continuity we had was a pretty big advantage.

Don’t get me wrong we were a top 3-4 team in the west over the aggregate of the last few years… but we are not that team currently… and I’m comfortable cashing in on a team that tops out as a 5-6 seed imo this year for the enormous assets we can get by making a hard pivot a year before we have to.

doesn't matter how good the jazz have been in the regular season. if you're losing in the 1st round most years and on a good year you lose in the 2nd round, you are in the middle - period.

I agree 100% if we start to rebuild now it would make sense. I just disagree with the statement that we should have been doing what the Spurs are currently doing. We went all in with Conley/Bojan and our current group, had some success, but couldn’t get over the hump.

ETA: My biggest fear is that we run it back to be competitive while hosting All-Star weekend, Rudy's value diminishes even more, we lose Bojan for nothing, and Don asks out.

I think the team remained optimistic because we lost to Denver in the Covid year without Bojan and the Clippers without Mike.
