Stats--which are the best guide?

PER is 2nd best to Eff, & according to Jazzfanz' brain, both are only wrong when it comes to Al Jefferson.

Wins and Losses are the only stat that matters.

However, over the course of a season, I would say +/- as it shows how effective a player was on both sides of the floor. Did the team score more and defend better with them on the floor than with someone else?

I like offensive and defensive Points per possession stats. Used for both the team and individual players. Though I do believe that all stats are relative to the argument you are making.

What's that phrase about lies, damn lies and statistics?

Arguing by using statistics is like arguing with your wife/gf. Whatever it is can be twisted around to make her look better and you look like a fool. Better to just shut up and nod your head...even when you are 100% sure you are right! Either that or make sure you have a very comfy sofa to sleep on.

In seriousness, I think PER is the best overall stat we have. But as has been stated, a guy with a 16 can be worse for your team than a guy with a 13, so you don't just assemble the highest PER's and tell the league where to mail the trophy.

The trend in statistics is towards efficiency metrics which I think gets overrated. I think a player's efficiency is important, be it PPS or TS% or the much revered Locke Offensive Rating. But outside the superstars, who mix efficiency with volume usage, you want a mix of Efficiency Heroes with less efficient guys who have unique talents. Plenty of inefficient guys in the league I would take over the efficient ones.
