Summer League Notes And Discussion

Assuming Wallace has improved his shot. He was an alright passer and a good defender in the summer league but his shot was just awful. I knew he had promise based on his athleticism and defense. Good for him for improving.

Just bought tickets for my wife, son and his friend to go watch Exum, Mitchell, Bolomboy, Bradley, Wallace, Williams-Goss and the Aussies Creek and Sobey do battle against Fultz, Luwawu, Bolden, Poythress, Tarczweski, Briscoe and Trimble on Wednesday. Hopefully the young'ens look great and give us some optimism moving forward.

Super excited to get a look at Mitchell. Love his potential. Bradley also. Wasn't terribly excited by the pick in the moment, but his potential has grown on me the more I've looked into him.

My guess is they just want to boost Exums confidence. My bet is he plays in 1 game or two and dominates then sits. Although maybe there is only a couple games anyways. Kind of like what Jazz did with others they made go to summer league after the first one. It seems like DWill did that, maybe Burks and someone else. I could be remembering the wrong people though.

Jaylen Brown will also be playing for the Celtics which I'm excited about.

Actually, I'm hoping that they bust out a lineup with Zizic, Brown and Ojeleye. That would be awesome. I like all 3 of those guys. Looks like their guards are trash though.

Everyone who lives in SLC go to the Boston game and boo the **** out of every Boston player.

the Jazz can confidently not bring Exum back next off season as they found a better player to take his place.

Yeah, that's not going to happen. They invested a #5 pick in a player they expected to be a project. Now, to most Jazz fans, project means he might not be good for the first few months and then he becomes a superstar overnight. However, to the jazz, a project means a player who might take several years to develop, and even though Dante hasn't become the star fans think he should be, he absolutely did develop in his 2nd year compared to his first.

Right now Utah is in a position where if Dante were to blow up this year, they can't afford to match some ridiculous contract without cutting corners somewhere else that they don't want to. If Mitchell outplays Dante, it gives Utah a convenient reason to limit his minutes, and hopefully extend him for as cheaply as possible, and then continue developing him without the risk. If Dante were to show flashes of greatness this year, the worst thing that could happen would be Dante testing FA and finding someone to risk stupid money on him.

If Utah were to give up on him, he would be traded away. Letting him walk for nothing would be bad management. Right now, the objective is to get him extended as cheaply as possible.

I thought I'd give everyone a heads-up on the abilities of the new Aussies, Creek and Sobey, so you know what to expect.

First, I'll start by comparing Creek to Slo Mo Joe:

In common: left-handed, played for Southern Tigers in the Adelaide league.

Differences: Creek was born in Victoria and moved to South Australia to start his pro career, Jingles was born in South Australia and moved to Victoria to start his pro career.

Creek is an elite athlete with speed and hops, and skinfolds you can only measure with a micrometer. Plays above the rim. Prefers to drive to the basket rather than shoot from outside, which is a good thing as his outside shot is poor and erratic, although it has improved over the years. Not a noted passer. Struggles from the stripe. Relies on athleticism on defence.

Now comparing Sobey to Slo Mo Joe:

In common: Cool nickname (Sobey-wan Kenobi). Played professionally in Europe. All-round player, can play either guard spot, good passer and shooter, hard-working defender.

Differences: Sobey is an elite athlete with speed and hops. Plays above the rim. Prior to last season, he demonstrated a very low basketball IQ, with poor shot selection and more turnovers than assists, but his much improved decision-making last season saw a boost in minutes and production, and culminated in the Most Improved Player award at season's end.
