Summer League Notes And Discussion

Still could happen. I'm waiting for Cleveland to do something. NY wants to move Anthony and go young. Carmelo to Cleveland with Love to Utah? Reunite him with Rubio. Do we have the assets to offer? I'm thinking NY is very happy if they can get cap room and young assets. Favors and Diaw (they save $7M right there), + Exum (or Hood) + next year's #1. Salary wise the trade works.

Jazz would be "all-in" and the talk of the NBA. Small market nobodies suddenly contenders, even in the WC.

No, we wouldn't. The Warriors would still be superior in 4 out of 5 positions.

I thought I'd give everyone a heads-up on the abilities of the new Aussies, Creek and Sobey, so you know what to expect.

First, I'll start by comparing Creek to Slo Mo Joe:

In common: left-handed, played for Southern Tigers in the Adelaide league.

Differences: Creek was born in Victoria and moved to South Australia to start his pro career, Jingles was born in South Australia and moved to Victoria to start his pro career.

Creek is an elite athlete with speed and hops, and skinfolds you can only measure with a micrometer. Plays above the rim. Prefers to drive to the basket rather than shoot from outside, which is a good thing as his outside shot is poor and erratic, although it has improved over the years. Not a noted passer. Struggles from the stripe. Relies on athleticism on defence.

Now comparing Sobey to Slo Mo Joe:

In common: Cool nickname (Sobey-wan Kenobi). Played professionally in Europe. All-round player, can play either guard spot, good passer and shooter, hard-working defender.

Differences: Sobey is an elite athlete with speed and hops. Plays above the rim. Prior to last season, he demonstrated a very low basketball IQ, with poor shot selection and more turnovers than assists, but his much improved decision-making last season saw a boost in minutes and production, and culminated in the Most Improved Player award at season's end.

Sobey is a good shooter? He shot 41.2% this year including 21.4% from three. Good passer? He averaged 1.5 assists in almost 28 minutes a game. Cmon, man.

Homey would like to comment about the two Aussies and Wallace. I think the two Aussies are here as a PR gesture and I don't think anyone thinks they are going to make the Jazz final roster. One note is that they both averaged double figures in the Australian Pro League. This was the league Bryce Cotton was MVP of and the rookie of the year in that league is an Aussie that played at Boise State and was a solid player who ran Doug McBuckets out of the gym when their college teams met.
Regarding Wallace he has a lot of the physical attributes of X. His shooting was not good in the DLeague but he still averaged 14-15 points per game. If he improves his shooting he could make the team.

I like Wallace, but I don't think he makes the team this year unless it's one of the two split contracts. Even without Hill, I think Utah will be flush with guards. Right now, he's a guy that I'd look at hard for one of those two spots. . . otherwise he sticks with the Stars.

I'm hoping eventually that the G-league ends up having split contracts for the entire roster and anyone can get called up for a maximum of 5 games before they have to stay up. That would be a better system for the long haul. It would basically give the teams 2 roster spots to evaluate 15 players without sacrificing all of their playing time.

In Locked On Jazz today there were 2 SL notes

1. It starts today at 7 PM.

2. Mitchell has looked "really, really good". (emphasis on "really" came across in podcast)

So excited for Mitchell. Hoping he's the next Gobert-like impact player for the Jazz. Really want people to look back and think "Damn. That kid should have been a top 3 pick."
