If you were going to buy it anyway, how does this law force you to send more money to the insurers?
I do. I see this as a step on the path to something that I think would be the best model for the USA: something akin to the German model. I think the single-payer system used in Engloand and Canada is not workable in the culture of the USA. We believe too strongly in competition, and distrust the running of things by the government too much. It's a bad fit to have the government directly control the provision of care. On the other hand, Germans have the government pay health insurance companies for their health care, and health insurance companies compete for the business of the German citizenry. The health companies even get a bonus for those with chronic conditions, making them more desirable to health insurance companies than healthy citizens. If a citizen thinks the insurer is treating them badly, they can take their business to another company.
I don't like that the currentl system still relies heavily on employer-subsidized care. I think if you take that burden off employers, everyone will benefit. However, I think that, in the USA, there are advantages to keeping health insurance companies, and I firmly believe in doing what, as far as I can tell, will work best for the USA.
