The morphine doesn't make sense because it is Venom that gives Bane his powers/intelligence.
What is being administered was changed for the movie.

I have to admit that the whole Bane/Talia thing was done in a clumsy way and Bruce Wayne's rehab didn't have any weight to it, but other than those items, I think the movie will go down as a high quality movie. The 2nd movie was just so freaking good that I think it makes both the 1st and the 3rd pale in comparision.

I like BB the best in lots of ways.
This is why I kinda wish the ending really wrapped things up instead of making lee-way for another sequel. Some idiot somewhere in WB will want a sequel with Joseph Gordan Levitt whether it's by Nolan or not.
I found this online. A review of the movie. They also mention morphine.

I thought the tubes regulate his intake of venom giving him just enough to stave off withdrawal. Bane is defeated when he goes into severe withdrawal because Batman severes the tubes. This is comic book lore and I think Nolan just combined all that into the mask. I thought the whole Bane thing was done well.
I like it as well but few will argue that the 2nd wasn't the stronger film of the series. Personally, it was a bit much for me and I loved the first and third one for the focus on Bruce Wayne's own demons, however, as much as I feel that way, the 2nd movie was the best super hero movie of all time IMHO in terms of execution.
It wasn't an interpretation. Like I said, it's how it is in the comics. As far as what Nolan was actually going for I don't think it mattered. It was obvious Bane needed the mask to survive and that's all that Nolan wanted. You could interpret it that way, but Venom is never actually mentioned.
Maybe among the public, but among hardcore Batman fans, it's actually not such a huge gap. Over a year ago there was a pole on a Batman board and it was about 50/50 on the BB vs TDK debate.
