The Donovan Mitchell Hype Thread! (repository of highlights and effusive praise)

But wouldn't most NBA level athletes who can jump off two feet also successfully be able to train to be competent at the NBA level at jumping off one foot?
Idk what you mean by successful. The guy can jump off 1 foot. He just can't play above the rim off 1 foot in traffic. I don't know if anyone with a 8'1 standing reach can. More important to learn to play below the rim off what he can do off 1 foot.

We really don't know how high he can jump off 1 foot because he always goes to his comfort 2 foot approach in space.

He uses 1 foot in traffic when playing above the rim is impossible for a guy his size.

I've heard so many people mention this in regard to Mitchell but I've honestly never heard discussion of jumping off one foot before.

What's up with this jumping off one foot thing? Why would a person who can jump well off two feet not also jump well off one foot?

Two foot jumpers give the defense a little more time to adjust and challenge the shot. I think at his height he'll really have to develop the ability to jump off one. Same as what Exum has had to do

Dennis Smith Jr?

BTW, I'm suspicious of the 8'1" standing reach. Looks a little like the Pat Connaughton phenomenon. For someone of his height, a long wingspan and not a particularly long neck, 8'1" seems a little odd. The great one-footed jumper Russell Westbrook is only one inch taller w/out shoes and has a 2 1/4" shorter wingspan yet has an 8'4" standing reach.

Nah, Dennis Smith is a 2-foot jumper too, though he is more explosive off 1 than Donovan is. Still, if you watch his dunk compilation from college, it's all 2-foot dunks save for 1 break-away dunk and one where he barely clears the rim after he splits a double team.

Your wingspan isnt exclusive how long your arms/hands are. Shoulder width plays a huge part in your wingspan.

Lillard can jump both off 2 feet and off 1.

Lillard is nice

I see a lot of Lillard in Mitchell(offensively). He wasn't great finishing around the rim in the first several years of his career either, but he learned how to use his body and developed his touch and skill around the rim and is now deadly even there. But Mitchell has similar off the dribble game and pull up game. He has to start hitting them at the level Lillard is doing it, but I think Lillard is a reasonable goal offensively for Mitchell.
