The Jazz Can't Escape Their Biggest Problem

Going along with Lowe's piece:

Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin said points in the paint is the most telling stat when it comes to evaluating his team's defensive performance.

The Jazz were outscored 58-38 in the paint by the Nuggets in the blowout loss last night. Denver also shot 56.2 percent from the field.

This season, the Jazz are 27-7 when they outscore opponents in the paint. Utah is 10-28 when it's outscored in the paint.

Is there any particular reason he gives so much attention to the Jazz? I couldn't imagine anyone being able to analyze and write an article of this length/detail for 29 other teams as well.

Good article. Wow, he didn't even get to the part about Foye, Mo and Sap not being able to rebound competitively even if the Jazz did play good defense.

Or the part about Faried literally running circles around Millsap.

Or Mo and Foye combining to jack up a ton of shots with a 20% success rate.

I really enjoy his articles.

I hope he is saying something else about our defense next year, and the year after, and the year after. But, we'll re-sign Mo... and Corbin will have another shot to put out a miserable defensive scheme.

(All hail Coach Thib)

He didn't "Catchall" of the Jazz's problems, just what he considers to be the worst of them.

I'm gonna think out loud:

Since it is painfully obvious that (a) we get abused whenever Mo or Al is involved in a PnR, (b) woefully abused when both are involved, and (c) Hayward is showing he is capable of orchestrating the offense, then why not bring Mo off the bench and put a defense-first player on the opposing PG?

Starting lineup:
Burks
Carroll
Hayward
Millsap
Jefferson

(Carroll can guard the PG about as well as anybody we have. Not great, I know. If the matchup is wrong, then use Burks or Hayward. Burks growth in the PnR also helps distribute the playmaking in this squad. Also, remember Millsap's 9 assists? Between Hay, Millsap, and Burks this unit can get into a flow; and if they are well-drilled on defense, then they should be able to compete.)

Bench:
Mo
Foye
Marvin
Favors
Kanter?

(If Corbin doesn't stop over-using Foyeeee3, then we are gonna get abused by Pop. Predictably and Hard.)

NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN.

Lowe mentioned on twitter that he's done stuff on the Pacers and Bucks as well. I haven't read those so I can't comment on the level of detail.

I'm nearly positive the Jazz are his team. I remember him talking about them a lot before he got on Grantland.

The only way I see the Jazz having a chance is if Foye/Williams/Hayward are just on fire from deep. With the Spurs defensive discipline, I will give that a 20% chance happening for every individual game, and 5% chance it happens over the course of the series.

I think 20% is about as accurate as this sort of projection can be.

I'm sure we both agree this is way too low, and therefore Corbin should have the nuts to do something different.

I think he has to go to it, because it's our best chance of an upset, but he has to realize when something isn't working and be proactive about changing it.

Luckily, Danny Green isn't really a threat to take a distinct advantage of Foye's lack of size like a player like Igoudala can.

As long as nobody stops what Parker and Duncan want to do, then we don't have a chance. Foyeeee3 can get hot as ****, and that'll keep us in the game, but the Spurs will win every game in which Mo and Al are featured defenders. Yes, I said sweep.
