The Utah Jazz have waived swingman Elijah Millsap before his contract guarantee date this week, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Millsap, the brother of Atlanta Hawks All-Star forward Paul Millsap, was informed of his release Tuesday. The Jazz faced a Thursday deadline to decide whether to guarantee the contract of Millsap, who signed a three-year deal during the 2014-15 season. The decision to waive Millsap solidifies forward Chris Johnson's roster guarantee.

Millsap, 28, averaged 4.2 points, 2.8 rebounds and nearly one steal in 67 games with the Jazz spanning the past two seasons. Several teams are expected to have interest in the 6-foot-6, defensive-minded guard.

Since Millsap joined the franchise on a 10-day contract last January, coach Quin Snyder has praised Millsap’s defensive abilities and positive mindset.

Undrafted out of the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2011, Millsap has spent three separate NBA training camps with the Oklahoma City Thunder (2010), Los Angeles Lakers (2011) and Milwaukee Bucks (2014). He has also starred in the NBA Development League, most recently with the Bakersfield Jam.

<---- shocked

Sad story, though. But the dude totally lost the meager offense he had.

Yeah also Chris Johnson has been shooting the ball really well, he has helped us a lot recently which makes Millsap more expendable?

Makes me wonder if DL has other moves in mind? Could we be adding other players or do we keep the 14 player roster & flexibility so we can be a facilitator as we get closer to the trade deadline?

Yay. I love being the facilitator. Like giving away a serviceable if overrated player to help someone else get a borderline All-Star in exchange for a steaming pile of **** and "cap-flexibility."

If he could work on his offensive game, cut down on some of the turnovers, he's a decent defender that could spell someone for ten minutes or so a night. I wonder if he'll land anywhere. I imagine this feels like getting fired in some ways, which must be incredibly difficult to face, especially when you've gotten so close to being in the league.

I think this is more about Elijah vs other options that had been put off until a deadline forced it than a forthcoming trade.

Johnson has been better for a really long time now. I'm glad they gave Millsap as long as they did, but it was obviously time to move on. Hopefully they pick up Christian Wood and send him to Idaho.

Johnson is only good enough to be an end-of-the-bench kind of guy. I hope they use the spot to pursue a legit NBA wing player to improve our depth, as opposed to signing d-league guy like the cheapskates they typically are..

wonder if we will sign someone

Uhh, we are going to do the same thing we did last year probably, sign a bunch of 10-day contracts until we find someone we kind of like in practice, then most likely cut him before he becomes fully guaranteed.

Highly doubtful the Jazz go forward with only 4 healthy wings on the roster.

I am surprised we cut him this early, the deadline was the 15th (or am I remembering that wrong). If we did cut him early, maybe we are going after Wood since he just got released. Who knows.

Article says deadline is Thursday.

That's what I'm expecting. A major trade happens if another team gets stupid, otherwise it's going to be boring is my guess.

Nice find. Still kind of weird we did it 2 days early, seems like most teams, and especially the Jazz, usaully wait til the last day to do these things. I guess we are going on a road trip though and it would be kind of inconvenient to cut someone during that.

Millsap just never learned how to not be a giant klutz with the ball. Sad too, cause I think he actually had a good offensive IQ (he made some nice passes every now and then) but he just had no idea how to slow himself down or shoot.

I think tomorrow is when teams can start signing DLeague guys to 10 day contracts so this makes some sense. I had the feeling he should have gone to Summer League to work on his offensive game.
