What's new

The Lauri Thread

https://www.deseret.com/sports/2024...anen-growing-skills-as-jazz-continue-rebuild/

If Lauri was playing the game he has been playing for years before coming here, he would likely be playing better, but he's trying to develop along with everyone else, which means trying new stuff that he isn't good at. as long as he combines everything together in a couple years, he might be even more devastating than he was before. (and you tank folk will like the losing along the way.

Exactly what? All he is doing is standing around and chucking no-hope threes.
Exactly.
When he was playing like an all star he wasn't doing that.

Eh, you are just repeating the Jazz PR they put up following the somewhat disappointing performance by Lauri this year. When the star players are trying to expands their offensive bag they are usually doing what they have been doing before plus adding some new stuff: their FG% may go down a bit but they are the same star player. Lauri is simply shooting a lot less and rebounding a lot less and getting involved offensively much less at the end of the close games. What do you think he is practicing, staying away from the ball and avoiding the action?

It's much easier to understand what is happening to him by looking back on his career: Markkanen has always been an inconsistent player, capable of putting together several months of good play but unable to maintain it year after year. He got the bag as a player who unexpectedly put together in the middle of his career 4 months of amazing play (in 2022-23). He never played that well before, he never played that well since. When a player gets paid well for one season in his mid-20s he usually regresses back right after and that what Lauri did.

I mean, don't get me wrong, Markkanen is a very good player: he is roughly in the same range as Collins. Lauri is capable of very elite bursts but simply cannot get enough motivation and skill to maintain that level year after year. Unfortunately, Lauri got overpaid and that will constrain what the Jazz can do going forward. In the ideal world having someone like John Collins as your 3rd option for 26 million is way better than having Markkanen for for 46 but it is not the end of the world.

I just had some of Lauri's highschool classmates at my house last night. I asked what he was like, they said tall, very tall.

On a side note for the Finnish friends here a band came that you might know Roope Salminen & Koirat. Anyone know them?

Yeah, it's a party music kinda rap. Not really my cup of tea, but Lauri likes them.

With Lauri likely out for the season, it might be a good time to revisit this thread.

Lauri ended up playing 47 games, He averaged 31.4min/game (-3min from all star year), 19 pts/game (-6.6pts from all star year), 5.9reb/game (-2.7reb from all star year), 42/35/88 (50/39/88 in all star year). OBPM 1.8 DBPM -2.0 BPM -0.2 (4.9,-1.0, 3.8 in all star year).

Another injured forward, Lauri Markkanen, returned to Salt Lake City on Monday to undergo an MRI on his left knee. According to the club, that MRI revealed patellofemoral chondrosis with associated subchondral edema, but no other structural damage. Markkanen, out since March 17, will complete an off-court rehab program and will be reevaluated in seven-to-10 days.

Id say it's probable that Lauri peaked already. I'd also say it's probable he'll better than this season. The biggest key is now for him to fix his three point shot to be more consistent again. The other things will follow when he gets into environment where he's not treated like #1 option by opposing teams. He's not that guy, he's off ball player that needs a dominant on ball threat
