Interesting, Rich Gates, do you pull background checks on the owners of all businesses before you spend money there?

No, but when a business owner publicly does something I disagree with i.e. Domino's Pizza, I will not support them financially.

The "problem" with being a celebrity is that so many of their actions - public or private - tend to be hunted down and scrutinized by people who know only small portions of the story. I understand what Richgates and others are saying about Karl's reprehensible actions. After all, it is human nature to judge what is different from ourselves. But at the end of the day - and this is really my own personal opinion on the matter - Karl's primary role was to entertain. Just as Wilt's primary role was to entertain (not bed 20k women), or Michael's primary role was to entertain (not gamble away millions), etc.

I suppose I just consider what he did to be the actions of a young, immature man. Surely he's not the same person today that he was 30+ years ago. For that matter, he's probably not the same person he was 3 years ago. None of us are. Hopefully, in his own way, for his own internal calm, he's made amends. I shrug my shoulders at it mainly because when I bought my tickets, I was paying to see him dunk Kemp to the ground, or guard Shaq, or as many of his highlights show, run the famous play with Johnny Stock; not to ponder about his relationship with his kids/ex-one night stand.

So if you were in the market for a new Toyota would you go to Brent Brown Toyota without checking to see if he had commited anything you disagree with in the past? How extensive would your research be? You realize that you are most likely using an operating system on your computer (Windows) that is property of Microsoft, a company some would say was dishonest in their initial development of the Windows and at the minimum have played exceptionally dirty in business. Do you own anything that says the word "Nike" on it? Just wondering how the poor 9 year old Indonesian kid who made you sneakers feels. How about any clothes from the GAP? I could go on and on.... Maybe you need to be either more universal in your condemnation of others or more forgiving. Not sure, you can decide.

Realjazz:

I think you need to lighten up a bit. Just because I make a decision not to shop at Karl Malone Toyota doesn't mean you need to get your panties in a bunch. I don't go out looking for reasons to not shop somewhere, but when there is blatant evidence of someone's impropriety I will not give them my money. It's a personal decision, just like it is yours.

I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings. I just find it interesting the level of incongruency people have in their life. For the record, I wasn't trying to be a jerk or trying to be over the top, I was serious in wanting to know how far your morality test applied in your business transactions.

My feelings weren't hurt. I just disagree with your approach. I am reasonable and think most people vote with their wallet. If you found out the owner of your local grocery store chain was funding a child prostitution ring in Cambodia, would you continue to shop there? That's how ridiculous the line of questioning is. Everyone makes business decisions based on personal feelings. If you never have, congratulations you're one of a kind.
