The New Dark Age

Counting on the Democrats just means we are screwed, and transitioning into Trump’s version of totalitarianism.

“It is fair to say that Democrats in New York and around the country vastly underestimated the willingness of the Republican Party to cross every line, break every norm, and do so with enormous speed,” he said. “We’re in a period of adjustment. We better adjust really damn quickly.”
That’s on voters, not Democrats. Kamala was good enough. Literally any Democrat is good enough than whatever the cult is putting forward. Voters have to decide whether they want to live in a free democracy or an unfree authoritarian cult of personality. If voters can’t care enough about the well-being of their country then they don’t deserve freedom. Thus far, voters have shown that they care more about being entertained to death than freedom and democracy.

That’s your opinion, and you’re entitled to it. I’m not letting Democrats off the hook. The party of saps and chumps.

If American voters lack so much civic virtue that they see their neighbors being hauled out of their communities by masked thugs led by a Putin loving pedophile racist who just took away their health care for tax cuts to his rich billionaire buddies and says utter nonsense everyday, then it really doesn’t matter what the Democrats do or say.

The country is ****ed if we can’t see beyond our own noses. There’s such a thing as civic virtue. Rejecting Trump isn’t just a policy issue, it’s a moral issue. And if Americans lack the morality to reject the evil that republicans are doing… then what can the Democrats do to change that? There’s no persuasion in attempting to instill morals and values in the immoral and valueless.

In my admittedly over emotional affected opinion, both Democrats, and just as important, the media, need to be urging the American people to overthrow the government. Ridiculous? Well, yeah, that would be quite the change of pace, lol. But, like Edward R Murrow in the 1950’s and the “Red scare”, the time is long past for all of the major news networks to broadcast this message to their viewers: “Donald Trump is attempting to establish a fascist totalitarian state in the United States. And we must remove him from our body politic. Trump is a cancer in our society”. Will it trigger Trump and MAGA? Of course, it will be quite the scene. But we might as well bring it to a head, because it’s not ending, and we should, by now, be sick and tired of seeing a fascist takeover of our government presented as “nightly news entertainment”. Carefully presenting “both sides-ism”, guaranteed to accomplish nothing whatsoever.

I do know all hell will break loose if Trump and MAGA have to confront mainstream outlets insisting Trump is a fascist totalitarian, and therefore, the most anti-American president ever. And saying as much every single day. But our polarized state is not ending by playing nice toward fascism!

Yes, cable news does provide some of that political bias. MSNBC tells it like it is. But, so what? Fox and Newmax present their versions of reality, and in theirs, Obama is hung for treason. What we need is our media urging us to reject and find someway to defeat the arrival of fascism in the United States. The major networks are not doing so. Spell it out already. We are in a civil war, or a conservative revolution, which, as the creator of Project 2025 said “will be non violent, if the liberals allow it”. All networks should be urging the removal of Trump from office. Spell it out! We are not going to avoid going though this. So, bring it on! Just admit we are in the midst of an existential crisis, and that Donald Trump is America’s, and America’s higher angels and values, enemy #1. Call him what he is: a man who would bring the entire country to its knees to retain power, a man who would attack and destroy whatever higher angels of our human nature we ever nurtured, and elevate our darker angels, create a nation known for cruelty, not a nation known for promoting human freedom.

Don’t let a nightly news broadcast pass without reminding viewers who and what Trump is, and what he represents. Bring it on. Throw every spotlight you have on the reality of our situation. We are so polarized as to be living in two mutually exclusive realities. Trump created an alternate universe, and we should all be sick and tired at seeing it presented as an option! It ain’t an option! It’s fascist totalitarianism, no doubt eventually fully endorsed by the SCOTUS. The news presents MAGA’s view as if it were an actual option moving forward.

(BTW, I do know this will affect mainstream media $$$, making my suggestion unrealistic, money first, country an afterthought when it’s $$ involved. Capitulation, which we’ve seen from media, universities, law firms, is a thing. Sadly of course. But that’s capitalism for you, and one big reason why “the people” need to be in the streets more. Need to be marching on Washington more. If Democratic leadership is rudderless, if the mainstream networks love “both sides-ism”, then we the people need to take up the slack and take to the streets. Get in the way of ICE at every opportunity.)

Enough with both sides-ism. The media is supposed to be a watchdog, not an equal opportunity story teller! And yes, every Democratic leader needs to join the fight. It’s a war. We can’t deny that reality forever, while every plank of Project 2025 is shoved down our throats.

A few thoughts

1. Democrats are expected to preserve institutions and respect laws and norms

-AND-

Start a revolution to help ward off fascism. That’s a tall order that I don’t think has ever been done by any other political organization in the history of the modern world. And when you talk about revolution, all I hear are right wingers laughing because now they have the talking pts that will persuade millions of low info voters who get their info from dudebro podcasts, church, Fox News, and social media.

2. Democrats governed successfully and were still rejected for fascism. It’s hard for people like me to get on your call for “revolution” when I live in a red state and know what crap the country voted for last fall. Quite honestly, the country through either sitting out the election or voting for Trump, voted for fascism last fall. And a big part of me wants them to get it and get it hard.

3. I don’t believe democratic organizing should rely on the Democratic party’s organization. If good people in this country cannot reject fascism and resist, then they just don’t reserve democracy. If last fall really wasn’t “who we are” then people should be able to organize and reject Trump and project 2025 by voting against fascism, rejecting fascist oligarchs, etc. But if they can’t continue to vote for Repubs because they’re Mormon and white and part of their Republican tribe, then honestly let fascism take over. Maybe after a generation or two of authoritarianism, people will learn to value the freedom and prosperity that democracy provides. This is what happened In Brazil and chile in the last 50 years. It’s what happened in Poland recently. People need to want democracy over “eGg PrIcEs” or “tHe WoKe.”

If people can’t reject Trump and republicans over what this regime is doing to vaccines, Ukraine, and immigrants, then the United States doesn’t deserve to be a democracy anymore. as you said, the people should get in the way of ICE. But if we’re too busy on social media or watching the kardashians or desperate Mormon housewives to care, then it doesn’t matter what the Democrstic party does.

Btw, I attend a ward here in Lehi and members still bitch about woke schools, gay marriage, abortion, illegals, and masks. It’s like we’re locked in 2020… or 2004. Forever. Most voters (especially in red states) are low info tribal voters. They only care about tribalism and culture war issues. It’s like vaccines, project 2025, Ukraine, and Epstein don’t exist. So keep that in mind.

Yeah, see, what blows my mind is I think I’m supposed to feel this way about where we are, but I don’t want to, lol: “OK, if the people have spoken, and their message is ‘we want some type of fascist authoritarianism”, then that is the way we have to go. I don’t like it, but the people elected a fascist, and that’s that until the people no longer want that”. The situation we are in has always struck me as absurd. As if to say: “if Americans no longer, or never did, understand how ugly and dangerous fascism is, that’s a shame, but it does not mean they cannot elect a fascist leader hell bent on cruelty to human beings, because it’s their right to approve fascists hell bent on cruelty, and supported by Big Lies”.

Maybe to myself it’s always been the darker angels of human nature vs. the higher angels of human nature. Sometimes people make the most regrettable choice hindsight can provide. MAGA has always been characterized by “joy in the performance of cruelty against fellow Americans and ‘the other’”. There seems to be no question that Trump recognized our darker angels, knew what segments/elements in American society would resonate with his anger, his own hatred of “the other”, dark skinned undocumented humans, and there is nothing saying a candidate cannot appeal to our worst instincts and emotions and establish an administration dedicated to expressing the darker angels of our human nature.

And it should be bad enough for people to grow tired of it, as you suggest. So maybe we will learn the hard way, and somehow emerge, or maybe this is us for a long time to come. Teach me to take junior high school history teachers telling us Americans always wear the white hats seriously, lol.

Yesterday, the neoconservative columnist David Brooks wrote this in an OpEd in The NY Times.

"Trumpism… is primarily about the acquisition of power — power for its own sake. It is a multifront assault to make the earth a playground for ruthless men, so of course any institutions that might restrain power must be weakened or destroyed. Trumpism is about ego, appetite and acquisitiveness and is driven by a primal aversion to the higher elements of the human spirit — learning, compassion, scientific wonder, the pursuit of justice. …

“What is happening now is not normal politics. We’re seeing an assault on the fundamental institutions of our civic life, things we should all swear loyalty to — Democrat, independent or Republican.

“It’s time for a comprehensive national civic uprising. It’s time for Americans in universities, law, business, nonprofits and the scientific community, and civil servants and beyond to form one coordinated mass movement. Trump is about power. The only way he’s going to be stopped is if he’s confronted by some movement that possesses rival power.

“I’m really not a movement guy. I don’t naturally march in demonstrations or attend rallies that I’m not covering as a journalist. But this is what America needs right now."

Red, you reside on the east coast, right? I think you could benefit by spending some time out here in the Rocky Mountain west. These people live in a stupor a mass psychosis. And the only way out is pain. They need to feel their poor electoral choices. If the hope stove burns no one then people will keep touching it. And next time it might not be with someone as old, incompetent, or stupid as Trump.
Yeah, I’m in the East Coast megalopolis, Boston to D.C. you know urban America will always be more liberal than conservative rural America. And that’s been a noticeable difference, and divide, for a long time. Love Utah. Would love to get out there again sometime.

In particular, Kratsios’ first major initiative — a directive calling on federal agencies to promote ‘gold standard science’ — has attracted widespread criticism for undermining and politicizing science. Most crucially, the guidance expands political power over sensitive science topics and questions of alleged research misconduct. When Kratsios defended the effort in an editorial in the journal Science on 24 June (M. Kratsios Science 389, 7; 2025), one of his predecessors, John Holdren, went so far as to publish a letter in Science accusing Kratsios of deploying Orwellian doublespeak to defend a proposal that will further enable the Trump administration’s attacks on science. “And now the fox in the henhouse overseeing it all is Michael Kratsios?” wrote Holdren, a physicist at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, who served as science adviser to former US president Barack Obama. “What a charade!”

Holdren is not alone. “We were really hopeful that Kratsios would defend science, but it doesn’t look like he is going to do that,” says Kenneth Evans, a science-policy researcher at Rice University in Houston, Texas. The question now, Evans adds, is whether Kratsios and the Trump administration will present a positive agenda for science. “Tearing everything down doesn’t seem like a way forward.”

Kratsios declined multiple interview requests from Nature, and the OSTP declined to comment on the allegations in this article.

Crafting and presenting the dictator’s preferred “history”.

The White House plans to conduct a far-reaching review of Smithsonian museum exhibitions, materials and operations ahead of America’s 250th anniversary to ensure the museums align with President Trump’s interpretation of American history.

In a letter sent to Lonnie Bunch, the secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, three top White House officials said they want to ensure the museums present the “unity, progress, and enduring values that define the American story” and reflect the president’s executive order calling for “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History.”

Areas under scrutiny range from public-facing exhibition text and online content to internal curatorial processes, exhibition planning, the use of collections and artist grants.

“This initiative aims to ensure alignment with the president’s directive to celebrate American exceptionalism, remove divisive or partisan narratives, and restore confidence in our shared cultural institutions,” the letter states.

The letter, dated Tuesday, Aug. 12, and viewed by The Wall Street Journal, was signed by White House senior associate Lindsey Halligan, the director of the domestic policy council, Vince Haley, and the director of the Office of Management and Budget, Russ Vought.

“This is about preserving trust in one of our most cherished institutions,” Halligan said in a statement. “The Smithsonian museums and exhibits should be accurate, patriotic, and enlightening—ensuring they remain places of learning, wonder, and national pride for generations to come.”

“The Smithsonian’s work is grounded in a deep commitment to scholarly excellence, rigorous research, and the accurate, factual presentation of history,” the Smithsonian said. “We are reviewing the letter with this commitment in mind and will continue to collaborate constructively with the White House, Congress, and our governing Board of Regents.”

The White House review of the Smithsonian’s extensive collection of art and historical artifacts comes as the president has sought to reorient the country’s cultural institutions, including top universities, and demonstrates Trump’s efforts to recast parts of American history in a more positive light.

The Smithsonian’s Board of Regents agreed to conduct a thorough review of all its museum and zoo content to eliminate political influence and bias, the Journal previously reported.

Sarah Weicksel, executive director of the American Historical Association, said the White House’s effort was an affront to the historians and curators trained to ensure historical accuracy.

“If those things are taken out of the hands of historians, the public stands to lose a great deal in having reliable and engaging content that tells a whole and complex story of the American past,” she said.

The president singled out the Smithsonian Institution in his executive order and said the Smithsonian had recently “come under the influence of a divisive, race-centered ideology” that promotes “narratives that portray American and Western values as inherently harmful and oppressive.” He directed Vice President JD Vance, a member of the Smithsonian Board of Regents, and senior officials to work with Congress to block the Smithsonian from receiving appropriations for exhibitions and programs that don’t align with his opposition to initiatives that promote diversity, equity and inclusion.

Calls for the removal of RFK Jr. Such an incompetent fool. MAHA will kill more Americans for its views on vaccines alone. Shows us just how little Trump cares about his fellow citizens. RFK Jr. has got to go……

Agrassroots organization of health professionals has released a report outlining major health challenges in the US and calling for the removal of Robert F Kennedy Jr from the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

The report from Defend Public Health, a new organization of about 3,000 health professionals and allies, is an attempt to get ahead of misinformation and lack of information from health officials.

In an effort to keep making progress in public health, Defend Public Health’s report was slated to coincide with that of the anticipated second US report to “make America healthy again” (Maha). The first Maha report was released in May, and a second report was expected this week – but amid turmoil at the health agencies, it has reportedly been delayed for several weeks.

“The Maha report is essentially a distraction from the real causes of poor health,” said Elizabeth Jacobs, professor emerita at the University of Arizona and a founding member of Defend Public Health.

“This administration does not want to address things like poverty and education and access to healthcare. Instead, they’re distracting the public with information on solutions to problems that don’t actually exist. When the foundation of your policy is not evidence-based, it will collapse.”

The Defend Public Health report diverges from the previous Maha focus on issues such as processed foods and environmental chemicals, but it covers familiar ground in public health.

The group highlights the importance of food safety, security and access to food, including through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (Snap), and improved opportunities for physical activity.

They seek to ensure equitable access to vaccines; expand access to healthcare, including comprehensive sexual and reproductive healthcare access; and build strategies for clean air.

The report also recommends fully funding scientific research and public health systems; combatting scientific misinformation, including from the US government; and strengthening pandemic preparedness. They call for reductions in gun violence, now the number one cause of death for children.

And their last recommendation is to remove Robert F Kennedy Jr, secretary of the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), from office, calling his removal “the single most important step toward improving the health of Americans”.

The recommendations are exactly what the US needs to address to become healthier, said Georges Benjamin, executive director of the American Public Health Association (APHA). If you “look at the things that actually kill people, from the 10 leading causes of death, that is indeed the right list”.

MAHA is destined to kill many Americans. mRNA vaccine development may represent an important breakthrough in treating cancer, for instance. But RFK Jr. and the MAHA movement will kill such research. Kennedy has made a decision to kill the most important and encouraging area of cancer research and vaccine development in the United States.

MAHA KILLS…

Perched with his brain worm on top of Health and Human Services, Kennedy probably affects your health more than your family doctor. But unlike your doctor, Kennedy has no medical degree, no hospital privileges, never cared for a patient, never discovered a drug, never published a research paper, and wouldn’t know which end of a stethoscope to use if his life or yours depended on it. Nonetheless he has opinions, and he’s enforcing them on you, on all of us. This makes as much sense as pilots flying airplanes who have never seen a cockpit, or placing the future of the United States in the hands of Donald “Windmills Cause Cancer” Trump.

Many actual medical experts believe vaccines have done more good for humanity than any other public health advance in history. COVID vaccines saved nearly 20 million lives globally in their first year alone. They also reduced the risk of severe, debilitating outcomes and long COVID after infection. But Kennedy knows “for sure” that decades of knowledge accumulated by the entire world’s medical community is wrong, and he’s eager to straighten us out.

Messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines have been under development for 30 years. Compared to older technologies they are cheaper, can be mass produced faster, and can be changed more quickly to address inevitable virus mutations like with COVID. This technology also has great promise to treat cystic fibrosis, sickle cell anemia, and diabetes. Two American scientists won the Nobel Prize for their mRNA discoveries. To real scientists, mRNA vaccines are not controversial. Without them COVID would probably still be spreading death and disability across the globe.

In May Kennedy yanked $590 million from developing pandemic flu vaccines such as bird flu. Rick Bright, who led Health and Human Services Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority during Trump 1.0, said,“Disinvesting from mRNA strips us of one of the fastest tools we have to contain the next pandemic.”

But the greatest potential of new mRNA vaccines may be as a monumental breakthrough in cancer treatments. The DNA of cancer cells is as variable as the people who are hosts for the disease. Moreover, cancer cells create unique pieces of protein that are not found in healthy cells. A vaccine that produces those pieces can train the immune system to attack those cells. This technology could offer personalized treatment by training a patient’s immune system to read and then destroy individually unique cancer cells. The vaccines furthest along could treat pancreatic and brain cancers. Over 120 clinical trials on cancer vaccines were underway as of early this year.

But then Kennedy announced last week he will yank another $500 million from vaccines with mRNA technology. This will also discourage private investment, prompt key scientists to leave the country, and set back cancer research for decades.

Kennedy is slamming the door on the survival chances of millions of cancer victims, some of them will be the more than 14,000 Utahns diagnosed with cancer every year. While we don’t know yet who they might be, go find your favorite family pictures. Some will likely be in the photos you have in your hand.
