The Official "Marvin Don't Exercise Your Option" thread

I wouldn't mind him coming back as long as we don't re-sign Sap and Jefferson. It seems like Corbin isn't afraid to play him from the bench, and while he will be on a crappy deal it's only for one year. Won't hurt too much and he'll help fill out the roster.

Exactly. And Favs has trouble guarding the stretch 4, Marvin does a hell of a job at it.

You probably misunderstood what I was saying. Jazz will likely be $20M UNDER the cap next season. I think a FAR more valuable trade chip will be our ability to give teams TPE's - i.e. just absorb salaries without having to give anything back, especially for teams that are really deep into the luxury tax penalty.

We're not going to spend all our space; obviously have to keep a large portion open for re-signing our youngsters over the next couple of years. So I see Utah auctioning their cap space first to the highest bidders. Then they'll still have $8M coming off the books by just letting Marvin expire...unless he's playing well and a contender wants to give up a young prospect for him.

I agree I understood what you are saying. I just forgot I had already posted the same thing before. depression will do that.

I wish he would opt out because Corbin, who apparently we're stuck with, will always play him ahead of DeMarre which is not only unfair but boneheaded. Of course, the difference between them has nothing to do with talent but everything to do with effort. As others have said, Marvin is disinterested and this is probably why he has and never will reach his potential. The guy lacks drive.

Agreed on the stretch-4 comments. Marv is taller than Millsap-- he's more than capable to defend some PFs, particularly a stretch power forward IMO.

If we don't re-sign Millsap, I think Carroll will definitely get more minutes on account of Marv's being allocated to PF.

And lets be honest here: Marv is picking up his option. There is simply no way that he won't.

I've no problem with letting Marvin stay another year, so long as Millsap is gone. Carrying his salary for one more year shouldn't be an issue for the Jazz and the Jazz FO will always have three small forwards on the team, so the devil you know...
.
Besides, I'm not convinced that Marvin is a complete bust. Let's get a decent pg on this team and then see if Marvin is any good.

I don't think it comes down to getting a decent PG. Let's just get Marvin some touches. And without Alfense, there WILL be ball movement.

And good observations by Sandy and Weezur about the 4. If neither Millsap nor Al return, Jazz do need another big. Maybe Jazz bring in a rookie big to develop. But Marvin could definitely get some PT at the 4 in relief of Derrick.

One thing for sure is you can't base Marvin off of one year. Guys had strides of good years in the past and he's only 27, still very athletic. He had some nasty dunks this year. If Corbin would do the smart thing, implement an up tempo game, Williams could be our highlight film off the bench.

I'm not so optimistic about Marvin. He seems to lose focus during games and disappears, or just starts making bad decisions, bad passes, and taking crappy shots.
