I'm not saying there's a good chance at all that the Spurs wouldn't match, but I think it's ****ing weird that they didn't offer it to him already and am seriously curious as to why. If you think a player is a legit cornerstone to your franchise moving forward, you don't jerk them around.

There's no one here that will be saying we should wait till Gobert becomes an RFA to give him a max offer sheet.

Why didn't the Spurs sign him to an extension last off season?

Easy. They have a lot of free agents this season including Ginobili and Duncan. And if one of those guys(Duncan) would decide to retire the Spurs could possibly work under the salary cap. They then have about $7,5 Mil more in cap space because Leonards cap hold is just $7,235,148 and his max cap hit would be around $15 Mil.
 
Never question the Spurs. They know their stuff. Haven't they proven this?

The Queens, Pacers, and The Wiz don't know jack ****.

This. By not extending him, they could potentially have a max slot PLUS Leonard vs Leonard and no max slot. It's a risk by Leonard if he was injured, but it will give him a better team if he doesn't get injured.
 
And it's not like the Spurs need Leonard's good will. Leonard is probably just happy to be on the Spurs. He knows he is going to get maxed out either way. I mean, I'm sure he would have been extra happy if teh Spurs gave him the contract early, but he understands that it's a business.

Yes, it is likely they will pursue a big free agent and then sign Leonard. There was no reason to extend him last season and lose flexibility. To OP: there is zero chance we get him.

This... There were articles about it at the start of the year. They will give him the five year max. We could only offer 4. They will sign other FAs and then max Leonard it's already a done deal folks...

Leonard, to me, is a poor man's AK, in that he can't shoot or carry a team offensively, but is special defensively.

Been there, done that. No thanks. Matthews can impact the game defensively just as good, and is a much better shooter and fit for Utah.

That being said, I'm basing all this off Exum becoming an All-Star.

I guess what I'm saying in all my ramblings is that we have defense, elite defense right now: Gobert, Favors, Hayward, Exum. We need shooters/scoring. Leonard doesn't fit that. Matthews does. So, for the money, I'd rather not have Leonard.

Leonard does have a much higher ceiling than Matthews though.
