The "real" reason Ray Rice only got 2 game suspension!

Much discussion about the seemingly light sentence handed down by the commish on the Ray Rice assault on his wife/fiancee/girlfriend....and some new light has been shed on the incident! It has now been reported that the light sentence was the result of a thorough investigation by the NFL and Goddell in which Rices' girlfriend confessed/admitted to striking him (kicking him in the gonads) first! And then we have this point of view from Stephen A. Smith: "Women, like men, run the risk of retaliation. If any person strikes another person they run the risk of retaliation. Neither person is right but that is the risk of physicality." Your thoughts?

I don't enjoy being kicked in the nuts.

...evidently, Ray Rice didn't take kindly to it either! Keep in mind that Rice is getting banged on and banging on people all game long. His fuse is probably short and his temper not so long! You just have to walk away when a woman/wife tries to "bait" you into a physical confrontation. Tough to do when your testosterone level is probably through the roof! Rice probably listens to rap music which also feeds the mind into thinking pounding on woman is not all that bad. But it seems his wife owned up to her part in the altercation, they made up and now live happily ever after?

Is the guy a sports star or porn star?

The good ol NFL, where smoking weed three times can get you banned for a year, but beating your girlfriend to the point of unconsciousness is a whole two game suspension (and driving drunk and killing someone is a whole eight game suspension...and a second DUI after killing a woman with the first is worthy of a no game suspension).

But yeah, he really should have beat his girlfriend up good, since he got hit first. It's not like he's a professional athlete in prime physical condition who outweighs her by a hundred pounds or so.

...nobody is saying or denying that Rice overreacted to the physical confrontation he had with his girlfriend. What we are saying is that when you are "baited" and/or "provoked" physically, the possibility of such an overreaction increases by a factor of 10! Woman clamor and holler for equal rights and equal pay and equal treatment and then when the shoe is on the other foot.....yeah, my point!

He should have pulled a Ron Artest-- after a bunch of counciling his wife got violent so he took the kids and left despite being hit. Just walk away.

Hmm on a tangential question who would win in a fight between Artest and Rice? I think Artest has got him on height and weight. Artest also has some boxing training from his father. Don't know much about Rice.

And yet quality human beings like Al Jefferson are somehow able to restrain themselves.

Maybe AJ and Rice might just have different value sets? Either way it's safe to say Rice "upped the ante" when he knocked his woman out cold.

If some weak 100 pound man assaulted me, I'd really have to fear for my life before I did nothing other than restrain him. I'm the furthest thing from a tough guy but the sheer size differential could mean that I could seriously injure him. If I were an NFL running back with massive biceps and in peak physical condition that was used to getting hit by extremely large muscular men as a part of my job, I would think I could show even more retraint. Same thing with a woman, though there are more cultural issues at play there. Still many of them arise from the size differential.

Oh, and to clarify my earlier position, getting caught with weed once is worth 4 games in the NFL. Just once. Getting caught beating up a woman just once in the NFL? Two games. So smoking weed punishment wise is twice the crime that beating up a woman is. Awesome set of priorities you have there Goddell.

Question. Are men, no matter who they are, responsible for there actions? Answer? Yes! Are women, no matter who they are, responsible for there actions? Yes! SO, if a woman assaults a man either out of meanest, provocation, dislike, hatred, loss of temper, loss of self-control, name calling, etc.... then is she responsible for her actions???

...not really a different "theory" as much as an opinion. If Mrs. Rice confessed to assaulting her husband first (knee to the nads) then the subsequent repercussions were the direct result of her actions: 1) Retaliation by husband. 2) Reduced penalty by Goodell when she confessed to her first assaulting him....and accepting partial blame for his reaction. Rice made a mistake.....but so did his wife.

Stop, just stop.

Stop, just stop.

.....no can do! Can a woman provoke and push a man's buttons which may contribute to an issue getting out of hand? Yes. Is it wrong for a man to put his hands on a woman under any circumstances, even if she did push his buttons?

“The discipline that was taken by the NFL is the only discipline that occurred with respect to Mr. Rice in this case,” Birch said. “Were he not an NFL player, I don’t know that he would have received punishment from any other source."

....in other words, if this case would have gone to court, it would have been "thrown out" for lack of evidence....or....unable to prosecute.....or.....wife admits:"it was my fault....no need in ducking it!"

Is it possible that feedback from prosecutors and law enforcement agents on domestic violence weighed heavily on these decisions? What they know and what they can prove in court are two different things. Perhaps they felt Rice’s situation was more of a self defense situation given none of us has seen what actually occurred. Could that possibly be a plausible explanation?
