As for value, Ingles was a street FA. I'd give him no more than 3/$10M - and even that might be too much. But he is a glue guy, and babysitters for big boys (Dante) don't come cheap. Besides, I love to see him trash-talking with other wings. I'd pay good money to hear what he's saying!

Great post. As you said, the art to this is to sign whatever FA's we can BEFORE matching an offer for Joe. That way, the Jazz can exceed the cap to keep him. If he doesn't get a decent offer, I'm sure DL and KOC have enough contacts to have a team with cap space offer him a deal we can match...or his agent can call in a favor.

This is not what you want to do if you want to minimize the money you are going to pay or you want to avoid having poison pills in the contract. What that usually accomplishes is - it makes the pool smaller, but ones that are left pursuing the player are more willing to poison the deal as much as possible in order to make the team holding the bird rights not to match. It usually results in huge offer with trade kickers, with player options, with unfavorably loaded deal for the matching team. That's why I thought what the FO did last year with Hayward was stupid. They should have let the teams go after him, at the very least they might have saved themselves some of the poison pills that the Hornets put in that contract.

3/10 or 3/15 with the upcoming cap is doable. I don't think they pursue many FA's this summer so they should have the room for this. He'll be the 4th wing in the rotation. They are not signing another wing. I'd be surprised if they went after anybody but space filler at this point.

I believe if the Jazz do go after a wing player it will be because they don't believe in Burks. In that case Jingles still stays as a 4th wing and Burks is moved. He makes to much to be a 3rd or 4th wing off of the bench if they sign Carroll or one of the other big name wings that are available.

Or you basically eliminate the backup PG spot to clear up minutes because the Jazz are flush with ballhandlers. Why should they be trying to make space for players that aren't that good? Because of some antiquated notion? A 5-man perimeter rotation that is strictly good players is close to 30-minutes per person if they wanted to dole it out that evenly. But if you have an injury, you don't have to do much besides shorten the rotation. I want a team where you can just keep throwing starter-quality guys at the other team for 48 minutes, and the way you do that is load up on eight main guys. If Exum and Hood are in that conversation, the Jazz are at six, and there isn't a backup PG among them. Carroll and Tomic might get you there. Carroll could also play 4 in small lineups, btw, making him an almost perfect piece.

I don't think it makes a difference one way or another. Sometimes it works (Bledsoe), sometimes it doesn't (Hayward). If a team really wants a player, they'll make an offer. And they'll try to work the terms to their advantage. In hindsight, Utah should have offered Hayward the max for four years, right? Only problem is no one though he was worth that much...except the Hornets. Can you imagine the fireworks on this board had DL just extended a max offer on July 1st instead of letting Gordon shop the market?

Maybe, but I honestly doubt it matters all that much. Anytime a team is pursuing a restricted FA, they know they are wasting their time making an offer that is likely to be matched. Regardless of posturing like making comments that any offer will be matched, they still have to figure out what they think that player might be worth to their team and if there's any way they can make an offer that won't be matched. Back when Utah threw offers at Boozer and Memo, it didn't take posturing from those teams for Utah to structure the deals in a way to make it as difficult as possible for Detroit and Cleveland to keep those guys. I guess Utah could try the opposite and make comments like we might match as long as it doesn't cost too much, but I doubt teams will fall for that and make lesser offers. They'll probably just see it as posturing and still make the offer as difficult to match as possible.
