I don't know where the hell you live but Ive never seen a 16 year old date a 20 year old...Nor a 14 year old and an 18 year old.

I have (re: the 16 and 20 yr old). She was a friend of mine. Actually asked her out when I was in HS and she said she couldn't right now. I later found out why. She ended up getting pregnant with her boyfriend. He was a decent guy otherwise, and I don't think anyone would have wanted him sent to prison. Now as a father, I would be appalled to hear about my 14 yr old daughter having sex. But I would also have to consider the circumstances. Obviously, dating a fellow student is a LOT different than a 30 yr. old she met at the mall. And, I would also have to consider whether it was consensual. A long-term relationship is a 2-way street and both parties are responsible to varying degrees. Admittedly, I don't know the whole story behind this case. But if I DID want that 18-yr old to stay away from my daughter, then I might tell him or her that I would be going to the police and to consider the consequences of an arrest and conviction for adult/juvenile sex. But even if the two persisted in a relationship, the punishment should be commensurate with the crime. Consensual sex in this case is not the equivalent of felony manslaughter. IMO, the punishment should be a restraining order, classes and even house arrest. But a felony, 15 years in prison and being required to register as a sex offender? That's WAY over what the punishment should be in this case.

This doesn't meet the definition of pedophilia, which is, among other things, a psychiatric disorder. This is probably just the case (as often is) of an older teen hooking up with a younger teen, which happens frequently among teenagers, even among otherwise reasonably decent teenagers.

I also agree that the age diff is too close to warrant a severe penalty. I'd go for some kind of community service, but not make it a felony and not give the 18 year old a record as sex offender.

Now if it were a 32 year old man with a 14 year old (for example), I'm all for stiff penalty and sex offender. I'm not sure where I'm comfortable making the cut-off, but 18 and 14 doesn't pass the threshold for me.

Just to be clear, I'm not condoning what happened but I know of couples who were senior/freshman dating back them. I didn't understand the attraction because the girls were so young. To me, putting seniors and freshmen in high school together is a recipe for disaster, but in my possibly warped view, these are still students in a school. If I was on the jury, I would grit my teeth, swallow hard, and vote "guilty" because that's the law. It doesn't mean that I agree with it. I just think it's ******** to label a high school senior as a sex offender or "pedophile". I would hate to be labeled for life for some of the stuff I did as a senior.

But I still believe this is only happening because it's a same sex situation.

I disagree with your last line. I believe this is only news because it's same sex. I believe it would be tried and him punished if the older member was a boy. Just nobody would know about it or care. It does not always get punished but would if the parents pushed like they are in this case.
