What's new

THT has opted into his contract for next season

I think the only people I've heard talking about a possible trade with THT are those who aren't really fans of THT in the first place. This presumably doesn't include the Jazz's FO (though I guess we'll see).

By contrast, there's been plenty of buzz about the possibility of a S&T involving Clarkson if he opts in.

So I think it's pretty likely THT stays and if Clarkson opts in, I'd give it a 50/50 chance that there's a trade coming with him.
Yeah. I’d say that’s about right. The thinking I’ll be interested in seeing is what the Jazz get back if there is a sign and trade with Clarkson. Whoever we get back eats into the cap, but I could see the jazz trade Clarkson and an asset to get back a rotational player.

If Houston (to mention one rumor I've seen) as an under the cap team wants him, we don't HAVE to take much salary back. But yeah, for trading with most teams, we'd hopefully getting back someone at a position we could more directly use (PG, SF).

It really is masterful the way this roster is coming together. The Jazz can test all these cars and still have good tradable contracts that can be used to match salary. If Clarkson opts in too, the Jazz will really have a lot of movable pieces at the deadline, but also the possibility to retain or extend players if they start the year on fire. It’s encouraging.

Wasn’t sure how to feel about DA until this year. I’m glad I held back on my comments.

He might be a top 10 All-Time executive. If the Jazz win a championship under his tenure, then he definitely is. Was reluctant at first, but have come to see the genius in his process.

I’m actually really glad that Ryan Smith brought him here. Now he just needs to go spend those assets on the right players to take the jump to a contending team.

I’d be happy to get a 2nd for him or a former late 1st round pick that hasn’t worked out for him.
We are not getting a positive asset for him. That's the thing with player options - it allows the player to play their free agency perfectly. They can survey the market and know perfectly well what's out there for them. And since he opted in, this means no team told him they will give him that type of money in FA and thus no team considers him a positive asset on the contract. Thus no team will give us positive asset for him.

With that said I don't think this contract is some sort of debilitating negative for the team. We can treat this season as a "prove it" year for THT without much opportunity cost. He does have some talent, but he definitely needs to be much more offensively efficient if he wants to be a rotation player on a good team going forward.

But can’t the new team treat him as an expiring contract by the season’s end?
