Today marks the 50 year anniversary of the dismissal of the Whitlam government by the then Governor-General John Kerr. Many people myself included believe that their was significant interference from the British and American security services in the events that led up to the the dismissal.
The Whitlam government was the first Labor government after 23 years of conservative rule, hilariously if you look back on some of the conservative vitriol at the time it mirrors many of the things they say today. Whitlam's great sin was that he set about changing things, most importantly he attempted to nationalise Australia's mineral wealth by borrowing directly from the middle east and buying off foreign owners of Australian mines. The plan was to make all Australian citizens the beneficiaries of our enormous mineral wealth. Unfortunately these plans became public and put a shock through the banks in London and New York. To this day Australians receive almost nothing from our considerable mining industry with the majority of the profits going offshore or to shareholders.
