What's new

Touchdown!

I'm stoked that we are pushing ourselves to get to Mars. I hope we find evidence that there were once life forms on Mars. That'd be cool.

Yeah, this is exciting! I hope I live to see humans step foot on Mars. I think today is a big step towards that goal.

Color me ignorant but in what ways has the trillions poured into the space program and NASA helped advance us as a nation? As a human? I always hear of "scientific advances" but don't know what those may be and how they've truly helped do something like cure a disease or such. Help me out here.

Watch TV lately?

So has there been much discussion on terraforming Mars since we've landed? I just don't watch much television, so it's a sincere question.

Wiser men would argue that TV is not an advancement. That said, let's skip over that general idea. In what ways has it helped us otherwise? Please skip over the whole Sirius/XM thing.

So you think technology should only be about building a better weapon or what? Without any science programs, what incentive to students have to become scientists?

And if you think "wise men" would argue about TV being an advancement, than you're as far away from them as possible.

Then what are you getting at? The space program uses experts in robotics, geology, rocket engineering, and countless other scientific disciplines. You don't want scientific work to be done?

Thanks for the obvious but how has that work beyond our planet truly benefited us? Beyond the aforementioned entertainment advances. I'm not making light of the program. I truly want to know how the 12B annually that goes to NASA is aiding us here on Earth...other than keeping said experts employed.

Yet you want to skip over advances in communication, robotics, and knowledge?

Serious question, is knowledge not considered an "aid to Earth" in your mind?

So our exploration into space taught us how to advance robotics? Please expound. And I'm still waiting for one other advancement that our space exploration has brought us.

What good did exploration do Europeans? What was the effect of European exploration on indigenous populations that European explorers discovered? What is the typical long term effect of discovering other intelligent people as opposed to being discovered?

How will humans sustain our current population growth?

What happens to humanity if all life on Earth is threatened?

How does the universe work?

Is their other life in the universe?

How did life on Earth begin?

Space exploration will make all of the difference. We need to do more in space, not less.

Getting to Mars in and of itself is worthless. Definitely cool. It's the process of getting to Mars that is valuable.

First image from Mars was just received.
