Cleared to play in spring ball?

Is that really a good thing? Do you even want the kid around? If he's healthy it's going to be hard to bench him for one of the kids. Yet, is Travis Wilson a good enough QB to save Whit's job?

Why? He's just expressing the same things you guys were. I'd say that most of the Utah fans on this board gave the impression a few months ago that they didn't really give a rip if he ever came back or not.

Def our best QB. Way too many turnovers but he has Pac 12 level talent.

Undefeated against byu also.

First of all, he's only cleared for Spring Ball due to no contact. If we were approaching fall camp and the start of the season, Wilson is not cleared for any type of contact and wouldn't figure into the QB equation. I'm more interested in his prognosis later in the summer.

I think Wilson being back for spring is a good thing for the QB competition. I think it's always good to push the young guys with a vet who has some games under his belt. However, when you factor in Wilson's injury, turnover ratio, and record versus conference opponents, I don't expect Utah to go "All In" with Wilson even if he is given the green light in the fall.

Whit will continue to give the media lip service and say if Travis is healthy, he is the starter, but considering the QB problems they've endured in the past, I see no concievable way that you won't see Utah giving Connor Manning or Brandon Cox a decent amount of snaps prior to conference play. It's going to be a battle for Travis. #1 On Dave Christiansen's to-do list for a QB is not turning the ball over. If Whit lets Christiansen have absolute rule over all offensive personnel calls (he damn well better), I could see Christiansen going with a younger guy who he feels won't turn the ball over as much, regardless of experience.

Seems like a tricky situation. Because he could take a ton of reps away from the young guys in the spring and then potentially not be cleared beyond that. Developmental risk. Or he could be cleared to play, and then a few of the young guys decide to transfer. Because this offseason would be the ripe time for a few them to drop down to a JC/D2 school for a year to show what they've got now that they've used their redshirts. And maybe one of those that transfers is the one that could've helped you guys. I don't know, it will be interesting to follow.

That's a nice worst-case-scenario and all, but maybe we should wait and see how Utah uses him in spring ball and whether or not it leads to a mass exodous of QB recruits. I doubt it.

It's not a worst case scenario...it's how college football works now. It will happen. This offseason(as in post spring camp-fall) maybe not. But certainly after this year.

I think there'll be a transfer regardless of Wilson's status. I figured Connor Manning or Brandon Cox might bail after spring ball depending on which one comes out behind in the depth chart (my guess is Cox). I think even if Wilson is annointed "The Man" after spring ball, whoever lands at #2 on the depth chart is going to stick around knowing that they'll get their shot sooner rather than later.

As far as future depth, they'll still have Isom who I think is a great prospect who can redshirt as a freshman, and the possibility of Chase Hansen returning from a mission in '15 (if they keep him @ QB and if he stays @ Utah).

When Wilson was healthy, Utah had a top 25 offense, a 4-2 record, a win over BYU and top 5 Stanford.

So, yes, yes this is a good thing.

Utah wins 8+ games last year with a healthy Wilson. Maybe 10.

Never watched Trevor Wilson play football, but he threw 16 TDs to 16 INTS. Not too good.

Also threw 6 INT in a 7 point loss.

3 INTs in a 3 point loss.

A lot of Utah's losses seem to be in large part because of him.

Also loss every road game that wasn't BYU.
