Trey Burke`s shooting

Over the last few games it has looked to me that Trey Burke has figured something out and started to play a bit smarter. I went to checked the numbers to find out if he has altered his game and the results were both good and bad.

The good is that he is taking less mid range jumpers in 2015 than he did in 2014. So far in 2015 29% of his jumpers are defined as mid rangers by nba.com as opposed to 34% from last year. He shoots 20% from the Restricted Area this year vs 17% last year and 38% of his shots are from 3 point range. Last year that number was 37%.

The numbers for the year could tell the story of Trey adjusting his game a bit to become more efficient. I went to check on his last 10 games played to see if his improvement lately has been to the fact that he is shooting smarter. Sadly, I was very wrong: Over the last 11 games - he missed one so I counted 11 instead of 10 - he is back to the 2014 numbers, shooting 36% of his shots from 3, 34% from Mid Range, 12% from the Paint and 18% in the Restricted Area.

It does seem like Trey Burke is excactly the type of player we have been seeing over the 1,5 seasons he has been in the league: A high volume shooter who can`t really shoot.

Doh.

Good info.
Thanks for the research

So the conclusion is he's taking the same shots he's just making them now? Is that a bad thing?

In 2015 he's been really good. He has one good awful game weighting down a vast improvement percentage wise. If you could just wave your hand and get rid of that 2-19 Fg 0-11 3pt night. Trey is shooting 48%FG and 44%3pt for 2015. Sample size but it's better to be trending up than down.

He's either the future backup or he'll be traded. If I had to bet, I wouldn't be surprised to see him traded in the offseason along with pick/s or other players for an upgrade at the 1/2.

Sure, it`s nice that he`s been hitting more shots, but this does not alter the fact that his decision making when it comes to shooting is really quite bad, and consistently si. If we look at Curry and Lillard, they take over 70% of their shots from 3 or within the restricted area. Trey only takes 58% of his shots from here. If Trey made the same % of shots from the areas that he does now, but shot them from where Curry and Lillard shoots them, he would have an EFG% of 46% as opposed to the 44% he stands at now. If Curry were to shoot from the areas Trey shoots, his EFG% would drop from 59% to 57%. For Lillard it would drop from 53,5% to 51,5%. Also, Trey would get more FT-attempts if he shot more from the restricted area, meaning that his TS% would increase even more.

If you`re a bad shooter, you can make up a lot by being smart about from where you take your shots. If Trey can get smarter and shoot a little bit better, he might actually have a chance in this league.

I don't disagree but who the hell is stupid enough to want him? And if someone was dumb enough to want him, could we get more than one or two 2nd rounders?

So after 20+ games, Burke has actually improved his TS% by quite a lot. Looking at the numbers, this is not just because he is hitting the 3 at a better percentage, but that he is taking smarter shots. What he has done is to convert a bunch of mid range shots into shots in the restricted area. Specificially, he`s gone from taking 19% of his shots in the RA and 29% from mid range to taking 26% of his shots in RA and 24% from mid range. Combine this with him shooting a lot better from 3 and he`s suddenly a decent offensive NBA player.

I read the OP and was already writing the counter-argument in my head, then I saw the post date.

Geez.
