Trey Burke: Sink or Swim?

I like Burke and wouldn't mind seeing how it plays out here, but I'm more curious to know what our pick+him would be worth on the market. I'd rather acquire a 3/D guy somehow and allocate Burke's minutes to other perimeter players. We would see if letting ballhandling wings taking his duties and minutes works or not, and if doesn't, maybe we'll get a chance to see how Cotton and/or Neto works out.

I guess what I'm saying is I like Burke and I can see him grow since his position is one that requires the most growth, but he seems expendable from what I can see in this context.

At the presser, Lindsey mentioned Exum, Burke, and Cotton when talking about next years point guards. If that turns out to be the case, just let the chips fall where they may. Competition is the best determinant. Let Burke and Cotton decide based on their play. One of them will earn the role of backup. Because if Quin Snyder thinks Cotton will help the team more then Burke at backup, then that's the way it will go. And if he decides Burke is helping the team more, then that's the way it will go. The sample size for Cotton has been very small. If he's here next year, his worth to the team will become apparent in time. And Snyder will know what that value is and use it accordingly. Or not. Depending on just who Bryce Cotton really is. Competition is the best determinant. Burke can rise to the challenge, or Cotton can earn a job as backup pg for the Jazz.
 
I don't think he's a big priority either way. Keep him or don't. He's not well suited to switch defensively, which I think is what Quin wants to do. If you look at the Warriors' back-up guards, it's not a coincidence that both Shaun Livingston and Leandro Barbosa are long defenders.

This year to start the year he was being asked to play defense and run the offense. Pass the ball within the offense, run the PNR and make open jumpers. So I have a hard time with the statement he was being asked to do too much. I don't buy it. I just don't think he fits the system our starters run. And next year our whole team should be running it. The one guy on this team most guilty of not running the offense was Trey Burke.

I dont see the harm in it. Give him until the all-star break to show solid improvement or we go with other options. The great thing is we already have other assets. Neto and Cotton. I think we should enjoy having all this young talent, and let the cards fall where they may. Yes, I think Burke still has a chance to be our starter, and be the leader of this team. Right now Im leaning thats hes a lifetime back up in this league, but hes still got a chance to do more. Hes only had two years. I'm willing to give him a little more time. Although for us his time is running out because we have the assets behind him to use. I think Burke is going to have a great offseason, and make it very hard for us to let him go next year.

I could not have said it better myself. I am still holding out hope for the kid but my patience is wearing thin.
 
Even if Jazz decided to trade him every other GM knows how bad he is.
Jazz would get less than what they got for Kanter.
Quin has a big challenge ahead of him during off season to bring the best out of Trey.

Shooting is the one skill you most consistently see players get better at. The next skill is defense.

This game more than anything is about working hard. Trey has more than enough talent. He'll get stronger, shoot 1000's of jumpers a day, gain better endurance to play both ends, become a more crafty ball handler. This is the year you expect a big jump. If it's a matter of work making that jump I'm betting on Burke.

The one thing I do agree with that most detractors of Trey is that this team and system doesn't necessarily fit Burke's greatest strengths.

What are Burke's greatest strengths? Serious question. He's not a terrible player but I can't think of a single thing he does at an above average level. Defense? nope, Passing? nah, Shooting? Not that either, how about running the offense? Only if the offense is get Burke a contested shot. I just don't see any skill Burke has that is likely to ever be better than average. And he'd have to improve to get to average in most if not all of those.
