No... the real Trolling. The fishing version

And all other fishing.

I went fishing on Free Fish day (June 8th) and I think I've decided that Fishing is the old man sport I'm going to take up. Forget Golf.

So where the heck do I start? Obviously a rod/reel, tackle box, cooler for beer, but what's next? What do I put in the tackle box? What kind of rod/reel should I get?

Where are the good places to fish? At those places, where along the bank do I fish? How the **** do you fly fish?

And who wants to take my lame *** fishing?

Step one: buy my boat. 350 hours (that's real low), 350 c.i., 21', closed bow, a steal at $2500. Needs a shift cable. When do you want to pick it up?

I'd love to go deep sea fishing, fishing off a peir, in a river... Not so much into the sitting in a row boat in a lame pond fishing.

I agree on golf. Yuck.

I'm sorry my friend, but I'm not quite ready to make that kind of financial investment. Nor do I have a vehicle with capacity to tow, nor do I want to get a hitch welded to my CX-7.

But if you haven't sold the boat in a couple years, look me up.

For just relaxing and possibly catching a fish I really like trolling (just slowly moving about in a boat with a few lines dragging behind). You can use pretty basic fishing gear, a cheap walmart pole (I'd replace the line if it comes with any) and some shiny lures. You could even get a few rapala balsa wood fish things.

I've mostly trolled at Strawberry using the boats the rent out. Only frustration there is that they don't open up and start renting boats until about 2 hrs after I want to start fishing. Then, if you have a spot you want to get to that's far away you're another 30min or more into your fishing day before you actually get a line in the water. I've found fishing is much better before the sun gets too high.

A good place to fish from shore on Strawberry is Hawes Point, but fishing from shore can be frustrating if the fish didn't pick your particular stretch of shore to hang out at that day. Power bait works well fishing for trout from shore but I don't recommend it when fishing strawberry. They have a "slot limit" on cutthroat, meaning you can't keep a fish if it is between 15" and 22" (those are chub eating machines in their prime) but PB is used with treble hooks and the fish often swallow them, so if you catch a 21.5" cutthroat you have to put it back but you might have also ripped a hole in it's stomach with your hook, so it might not survive.

But for my money I like hitting up Utah Lake. Much closer for me and channel cats are pretty damn easy to catch during summer time. For those guys I just use a slip sinker and a lead anywhere from 12"-24" with a hefty hook and a worm threaded onto it.

I'm a total noob at fishing so if you already knew everything I said I'm sorry, I tried.

Get a float-tube and a fly rod with some medium sinking line and some flies and hit up Strawberry. I've never been skunked there and usually kill it.

Funny you mention this.. a couple hours ago I was looking at them. A little expensive for a starter fisherman like myself, but if this really catches I'll be all over it.

I never knew about the slot fish being chub eating machines.... is that why they make you throw those specific lengths back?..... Seems like that is the only size I ever catch.

I don't have a boat and so I don't fish the bigger lakes much, but when I have went with a friend who has a boat, I have enjoyed strawberry, jordanelle, Utah lake, deer creek, scofield, and rockport.
My favorite place that I have fished from a boat was flaming gorge though... lots of kokanee and a few big rainbows and mackinaw mixed in.

Since I don't have a boat however, a lot of the time I just try to fish in places with great scenery. Basically get someplace with a high elevation.
Last week I was at smith and morehouse fishing the lake right where the river comes in and I caught rainbows, arctic grayling, and a cutthroat but all of them were quite small.
Payson lakes is an awesome campground and I highly recommend you try it out. It has 3 lakes right next to each other and you are guaranteed to catch fish if you throw on a shiny lure (red and gold jakes lure, castmaster, etc)

For myself, I love fishing rivers, but only with my dog or maybe 1 other person. Im selfish on my rivers that I like and I want to hit up all the best holes, so I don't like to be with other people when fishing rivers.
There are 3 nice rivers up Spanish fork canyon that are all somewhat close that I enjoy. (diamond fork, thistle, lower fish creek).
Provo river is nice but super crowded.
If you wanted to do ALOT of fishing and have a long adventure, then I recommend driving to Jackson hole Wyoming and fishing the portneuf river, little blackfoot river, tincup creek, salt river, and greys river all on the way there..... Then just enjoy Jackson hole and the grand tetons, awesome little city.

yall know anything about the Snake River?

I fished it once when I was in Yellowstone and did ok..... well not ok actually, I caught like 3 small fish and had no idea what I was doing.
Great river for white water rafting though (done that in Jackson hole like 5 times.)

I have a friend who is a way more serious fisherman than me (wins competitions all the time) and he swears by the south fork of the snake (his favorite spot). I have seen some of his pics of the fish he is pullin in and I gotta say holy **** they are some nice ones!

A real good friend of mine owns a substantial portion of the Snake River (meaning both sides far enough that it's virtually private) and has countless celebrities, NBA/College coaches into fish all the time.. and he claims that 'can't reach' areas are the best fishing in NA.... hyperbole, I'm sure.. but was just curious if anyone here knows anything.

I also have a friend that owns nearly 1million acres in Patagonia (southern Chile and Argentina) and he has the top fishing guides in the world beating down his door. Liam Neeson (sp?) did a documentary piece on the fishing there.

I used to fish every day of my life when back in the Midwest/south (bass/crappie) and deep sea when living in the Florida Keys ... but haven't gone once since moving to the west. imma loser.

Haha.. caught that after I hit reply. Intended it to be lower/middle of state line.

ok that wasnt a "caught you with a misspelling! durrr" type of thing. I honestly have no Idea. You coulda told me the snake river was in South America.

This is fantastic! Getting outdoors, preferably somewhere nice and forest-like, is the real goal. I'll be eating some fish, but most of it will be catch and release. If I end up in another state, I have to go get a license for that state too, correct?
