True Grit

Having watched the original with Mr. Marion Morrison growing up I find myself shuddering at this hack of a remake. Bridges fails to even come close to what Marion did in the original. Some movies should be left alone.

I think you'd be surprised by how well of a job Bridge did in the movie. With that being said, I really need to see the original.

The original is one of a handful of westerns that I really like. And I am eager to see this one.

I'm excited to see it. I don't mind it being a remake because I don't really hold John Wayne in very high esteem. Most overrated "tough guy" persona ever. The guy was a draft-dodger. Enough said.

I watched a trailer for the original one last night. It was kinda funny and the trailers back then pretty much showed the hole movie. It looks like the new True Grit kept all the great lines and made the scenes very similar.

*whole

lol

The original was on TCM last night. It's good, but it hasn't held up as well as The Searchers, as far as John Wayne movies go.

Everything I've ever heard about Wayne was that he was a mediocre actor who was basically handed a statue as a sort of Lifetime Achievement Award. I doubt his True Grit is really that good but yet people have an easy time paying respect to the past for reasons no stronger than nostalgia really.

I don't know. I should see he original before I speak but I'm sure the new version is better in so many ways.

I'm not (in any regular sense) a fan of John Wayne or westerns in general, but I really liked the original True Grit.

Am I out of line to suggest that there may be a certain amount of subjectivity involved?

Not at all. But to say the original can't be better (as Marcus in many ways suggests) is silly. Especially when it's done with legit actors and crew.

I agree. There can be a certain emotional attachment, though. If someone decided to remake Star Wars, I almost certainly wouldn't like it, regardless of how technically superior it may be.

We have a tendency to judge remakes - movies, music, etc. - against the originals, which is fine, but sometimes at the expense of really evaluating it on it's own merits. As much as I liked the original True Grit, I feel like I can watch this remake as it's own movie. So that's how I'll approach it.

Exactly. If I'm being honest, at the end of Batman Begins, when Gordon flipped over the card to show The Joker so you knew as a viewer that The Joker would be the villian in the sequel, I rolled my eyes, thinking, Jesus, bad mistake, good luck topping Jack, but then The Dark Knight opened, and some fine actors nailed a good script and voila, most consider it far superior to Burton's Batman, even if it is far different in style and tone. Yes, it's a completely different script but the point is, an original can be redone. And better.

Dude, what if you said, "**** Al Sharpton. **** Morgan Freeman. Black people love them though."?

You brought up race to make a point about white people's judgment.

Wrong. Again, I don't think you know what Racism means.

Furthermore, white folk do love John Wayne and Elvis Presley. Probably has something to do with them being talented in their respective fields.
