Bogdan Tanjevic: 'We miss Kanter, in NBA coaches are stupid'

Tanjevic talked before the game between Italy and Turkey National Teams...

Bogdan Tanjevic will face Italy tonight in Sassari for the Eurobasket 2013 Qualification Round. Tanjevic, who won Eurobasket 1999 as head coach of Italian NT, decided to return at the helm of Turkish National Team few months ago. The coach talked on his team, full of young players but without the NBA big man Enes Kanter who decided not to join the National Team this summer. And Tanjevic didn't like his decision. His statements reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport.

- "What about Turkish National Team? There is the same core of the previous years with some guys from 1990-1992. Kanter?

He is a huge talent and we miss him a lot. He decided not to join us but honestly, he needs us more than we need him. He didn't play or practice with us over the last three years. I had to replace him with Gonlum who was on vacation with his family. Without Kanter we risk a bit but I think we will be able to make it to Eurobasket 2013.

- Italy without Bargnani and Belinelli?

I am not surprised at all considering that one of our guys from 1992 (Enes Kanter) refused to join us. America is the right place to lose your brain. First, because of the coaches who don't understant anything. In NBA there are just 3 or 4 good coaches who last for 100 years, gain billions and win trophies. The other ones are stupid, Tyrone Corbin included. I didn't want to call him. I should have told him and that I was going to do him a favour teaching basketball to one of his guys and he would have gained money on that. But I really can't talk to guys who don't know what they are doing.

Kanter forgot how to play basketball. He will never be a center but he starts always back-to-the-basket. As PF/C he would be devastating. He is 210cm but he is the best shooter in the Turkish National Team, guards included. And in the NBA he never takes a shot.

- Olympic Games?

I didn't watch a lot of games. I was still suffering because we didn't make it with Turkey. For me basketball is like cocaine. There are good drug treatments but then I make the same mistake again. I love to coach".

Very weird interview by La Gazzetta dello Sport, btw it's "sportando"s translation.

Anyway, Tanjevic isn't loved much in Turkey but he's a great basketball mind and a great coach in my opinion, so this weird interview made me, well, giggled. :)

Here is the highlights of the interview.

1) Enes Kanter is a huge talent.

2) Kanter needs Turkish NT more than they need him.

3) America is the right place to lose your brain.

4) In NBA there are just 3 or 4 good coaches who last for 100 years, gain billions and win trophies. The other ones are stupid, Tyrone Corbin included.

5) Tyrone Corbin is stupid.

6) Tyrone Corbin doesn't know what he's doing.

7) Kanter forgot how to play basketball.

8) Kanter will never be a center but he starts always back-to-the-basket. As PF/C he would be devastating.

9) Kanter is 210cm but he is the best shooter in the Turkish National Team, guards included.

10) Basketball is like cocaine.

I really don't know what to say to this other than..... this seems like a made up story.
Sounds like the dude is a little jealous of the NBA.

From what I saw last season, I can tell about Ty Corbin that he:
- doesn't have balls;
- doesn't have a feel for the game (including: rotations, game decisions)

That may change though.

Everyone around these parts used to say your quote number 2 described Jerry Sloan as well.

auuuu!!! hope that motivate Enes, I choose partially,

1)Enes Kanter is a huge talent.

2) Kanter needs Turkish NT more than they need him.

3) America is the right place to lose your brain.

10) Basketball is like cocaine.

i'm worry about Enes development, his summer games were not great, look like he needs more time than we thought this year shows us who is right.

coach Corbin is stupid? no comments

interesting how good is Enes's shoot????

Enes CanTear You Apart , while you bringing Tanjevic's interview you gotta also tell how he is. He has been coeaching in the Europe for 40 years and is one of the respectable masters. So if he says something, you gotta regard all facts and think about it. The interesting part for me is about Kanter position. He was the coach of Enes when Kanter was 16 so he knows kanter more than anyone in the world. He says Kanter's gotta work for being better forward and play center when it is needed. And he trusts his shooting ability so much. Really interesting.

Those quotes may be the dumbest I've ever read, talking about the Turkish coach. I don't think the US. coaches are dumb, I'd like to see him try to coach some of these millionaire players that think they are above everything else, and completely uncoachable. I bet the reporter thought he struck gold.

If Kanter is a more natural PF then perhaps we should put him on the court with Al at center. They could both play with their backs to the basket and we could watch then run into each other.

Yep, like I said he's a great coach and basketball mind in my opinion, and he always says what he thinks without hesitating so I like him. However the interview is so weird and short without a base content so it doesn't make great sense and looks like a made up story, like a work of a journalist.

Anyway, it doesn't change the fact that he has some good points but most of Americans (especially the rich ones) would just curl their lips and say "dumb".

Like this...

That was definitely interesting. After reading this I wonder how much time Tanjevic has spent with NBA coaches. Watching games only gives you part of the story. I think he went a little far by not leaving any middle ground for coaches to be on. Some coaches are beyond just good.

So they had some of these quotes on Hoopshype. One interesting difference in translation is that it has the quote as being that aside from the few good coaches the others are weak as opposed to stupid. I'm not sure if that's much of an upgrade or if it even is one.

Tangentvic is right and oh so wrong. He correctly points out that Kanter was not used as a euro, face-up shooter. But he was wrong to single out Ty as being stupid when Ty is coaching and using guys to match the nba style.

'3 or 4 coaches out of 100 years......'
He still believes the coach matters, and maybe the coach matters in Turkey, but not the NBA. The NBA is a star league, stars get the ball, the calls, the TV time and sell merchandise. The coach just needs to stay out of the way of the star and have witty quips to drop for media sound bites.

I agree with Tangentvic that the NBA style is stupid, er uh weak. But until they pry the control panel away from the cold dead hands of David Stern the style won't change, and probably still won't as long as 20 of the 30 owners are making money.

D'antoni was a euro coach, he's made it to one conference finals with the league MVP and got fired twice?

Mr. Tangentvic, Ty Corbin is not stupid, the NBA is stupid.

Don't know if he had spent anytime with NBA coaches but he's no doubt one of the best coaches ever, and he's a highly intellectual person who has lived a tough life through wars, being an ex-Yugoslav/Bosnian. I doubt he would give this kind of speech without good extent. And I doubt that those were his exact words, you know how reporters and newspapers work.

What I got out of it, was that Tanjevic is blaming Corbin for Kanter not playing with the Turks. You think the Jazz advised Kanter not to play and that's why he's not playing? Most of us agree that he needs the playing time.

His manager has said that the Jazz were OK with him playing for NT, can't know what happened actually since Kanter has said nothing about it and abandoned the team at the very last second.
