Unions... Forced Dues???

A co-worker of mine has had 3 cost of living raises in his 20+ years with the company. He's still 10 years from sniffing retirement. I'm almost 3 years there so starting over is certainly a possibility for me. That window is closing quickly though.

That's rough. It's a de facto pay cut every year. I can't really start over at this point so I'm going outside avenues to make up the difference.

There are great jobs out there for those who are willing. For example, Walmart truck drivers make an average of $80k their starting year. I ain't doing that ****.

Question for you guys. If I'm a union member under a union CBA but my employer paid me less than I was owed as per the CBA but the union claims they can't do anything about it, is there anything I can do about it on my own? Civil suit? Or has the union eliminated any possibility of a non-union negotiated settlement.

And it's not that the union disagrees with me that I wasn't paid what I was owed. The issue is that I only had 10 days to file a grievance, which I failed to do. Although there is some ambiguity there.

Anyway, not a huge issue but significant to me, it's $3696 in underpayment.
