Fabiano Caruana has just won the 2018 Candidates match, and will play Carlsen in the fall.

Caruana and Carlsen are tied, 3.5-3.5, in a match where only black had significant advantages over the first 7 games. Today, Caruana has white and seems to have a decent advantage.

4-4 with another draw today. I was hoping Fabi could get something going today, but looking at the results it looks like gave up any advantage he had when he played h3.

Many commentators were disappointed in that move. One said something like "World Champions should not play moves like that".

12 games, 12 draws. Now it moves into rapid and blitz games on Wednesday. We may even see an Armageddon game.

This is the only WC match in chess history with no wins. Even Lasker's match with "Drawing Master" Schlecter had 2.

Magnus easily wins the rapid chess 3-0, in a best of four tiebreaker, and retains his world championship. Fabiano is not the best intuitive player, his strength is the depth and accuracy of his calculations and in classical chess he has the necessary time. In faster time controls, where in-depth calculation is not always possible, intuition becomes critical and Magnus is the best intuitive player in chess history. Once the match went to tiebreaks with the faster time controls Fabiano was history. Really he never had a chance.
