IMO it's highly doubtful that the majority (or even a large part) of the fanbase wants to tank. Ever.

It takes a certain kind of mentality to resign yourself to 5-6 years of intentional losing, and the average fan simply doesn't have it. Another reason why tanking is such a dangerous game.
 
Losing viewership when your team is losing a lot is inevitable.

I mean we have pro-tankers on this board who have admitted that they havent watched as many games as they usually do.
Anti-tankers are skipping even more games since they hate what we are doing and also want to protest against tanking.
Casuals probably watched early season games, saw a trash team that isnt fighting for anything this season, so they turned their attention elsewhere.

However once the rebuild turns a corner the hardcore fans who didnt get butt-hurt by the tanking and all them casuals hop back into the bandwagon about as quickly as they once abandoned it.

I suspect this is accurate. People want to be entertained. Winning is entertaining, losing isn't. Most fans just want to watch a good, competitive, entertaining product, and they'll return once we're back to providing it. It's only a relatively small subset of fans who pin everything on winning the title; the "bandwagon" fans will be happy to watch 82 games of good regular season basketball, regardless of how far the team advances in the playoffs.

I would also say that I find the term "bandwagon fan" and how it's used to be intentionally pejorative; as if prioritizing entertainment quality is somehow a character flaw. It strikes me as an entirely reasonable way to consume an entertainment product.

I certainly agree that only a minority of fans (pretty small one too) want a 5-6 year tank. Just saying that a drop in viewership doesn't really say much, that was totally expected.
 
These viewers haven't been lost. They are just taking a break and will be back when the team starts trying to win.
I have probably watched at least 44% less jazz this season and I'm a die hard jazz fan.

The statistic is true, logical, and not alarming.

44% was expected? With Jazz fans being some of the most loyal (or THE most loyal) in the league?

I don't know about that.

Some of this damage may well be permanent.
