What's new

Utah Jazz have lost 44% of its viewership since a year ago.

I suspect this is accurate. People want to be entertained. Winning is entertaining, losing isn't. Most fans just want to watch a good, competitive, entertaining product, and they'll return once we're back to providing it. It's only a relatively small subset of fans who pin everything on winning the title; the "bandwagon" fans will be happy to watch 82 games of good regular season basketball, regardless of how far the team advances in the playoffs.

I would also say that I find the term "bandwagon fan" and how it's used to be intentionally pejorative; as if prioritizing entertainment quality is somehow a character flaw. It strikes me as an entirely reasonable way to consume an entertainment product.
I dont mind bandwagon fans. Imo there is nothing wrong with the term as that is perfectly descriptive of how some people operate... they only follow through the thick and not through the thin.

But they shouldn't be moralized for doing that. They are just following one of the most basic laws of business... you put out a bad product and you are gonna lose consumers. And by doing so they actually incentivize the owners to put out a good product, so looking from that perspective they are "better fans" than those who buy season tickets and merch regardless of how the team does.

44% was expected? With Jazz fans being some of the most loyal (or THE most loyal) in the league?

I don't know about that.

Some of this damage may well be permanent.
They still fill the seats in Delta Center, and unlike other bottom-dweller stadiums there's still a great atmosphere. I'm not sure if this was more or less than one could expect, but I'm not at all worried long-term. I certainly want to go back to Normal Days and enjoy games again, though. Hopefully they'll be too good to tank next year.

I’ve watched every game, I’ve taken joy in watching the development of the young guys. This aspect of the rebuild has fueled me

I've lost all interest and stopped watching because there isn't much to look forward to. I would still watch if we had awesome rookies/sophomores that I want to watch develop. But I'm kinda meh on all the young guys. I'll start watching again if the Jazz grab a stud with their top 5 pick.

If anything I'm surprised it's only 44%. League Pass was a no-brainer "no" this year for me.

Not saying it's the wrong strategy long term (it's the right strategy) but makes for some brutal years in the meantime. No wonder the league hates it.

We know why. It's all the DEI.
Don't know if you're trying to be sarcastic, but there may be something to this (though I would put it differently).

The Utah Hockey Club came around at the time of increasing Trumpification of Utah, and it seems some number (really not sure how many) of Jazz fans made loud announcements that the style of the NHL fit with their social views better than the NBA did. So, for the time being at least, their migration to the NHL is as much of a social-political statement as anything to do with the team (in NBA terms, at very nearly .500, the UHC is in the no-man's-land mediocre middle).

I don't know if this sorting of conservatives in Utah away from the NBA is a long-term real trend, or just a short term phenomena that's loud on social media. But, I suspect that support for the Jazz overall will pick up when they start winning again and it's easy to see their promise.

Don't worry, the Edgecombe era will be glorious.
