Utah Jazz vs Lakers Emergency Game Thread

Heard guys on NBA radio talking about Randle and backing up what I thought I saw. In college he could bully people with his strength, in the NBA it won't work. Here's hoping the Lakers have a bust on their hands.

But can he play the three? Is he hungry?!?!

Cotton is shooting 35% in SL!!! THIRTY FIVE PERCENT! In Summer League! Lets stop acting like he's some can't miss talent! And to add to it - he was destroyed on D by all NBA-level PGs he faced. Russell, Rozier, Clarkson, Smart all had their way with him. He can't fight through screens, he gets stuck and opponents are left all alone in the mid-range with variety of option on their disposal, he can't contest shots and they all shoot over him both on jumpshots and on their way to the rim.

He's a fun player to watch, but he's a borderline NBA player. I wouldn't be shocked or upset one bit if he didn't make the team...

A lot of good things have been written or said about him. But he ain't growing any. I do expect he'll work on his shooting, or die trying, knowing him. But yeah, 35% sucks. Pretty disappointing. And the backcourt is crowded. I wouldn't mind seeing him with "the made guys" on this team. He isn't the starting point guard, but I wish he had done a little better with his role as starter in SL. He may be better off as a FA or traded to a team more in need of a pg. There's no shortage at pg with the Jazz at the moment.

Don't get me wrong - I wouldn't mind if he made it on the team, but people are acting like he'll be integral part of that team, some are suggesting he'd be our long-term back up, there were even some suggesting he should start. For me he's a 3d PG in the league and I wouldn't mind him being on the Jazz as 3d PG, but I also wouldn't be upset if he didn't make it.

Remind me again how Trey Burke did in SL...

The 76's forum was wondering if we'll take a second rounder for Cotton. I think he can be a backup, personally. Not 3rd string. But, opinions are cheap enough. I don't think the Jazz will carry 4 guards. That was just GM speak by Lindsey, is my guess. And without a trade partner for Burke, Cotton will not be on the roster. Now I read all kind of moaning, not here but in recent columns extolling his virtues, that getting rid of Cotton would be a mistake. But nobody knows that one way or another. I think it was the extreme contrast in style Burke/Cotton that started thoughts of improving at backup. Maybe Burke is ready to pick up the pace. Cotton will be a good backup somewhere.

We don't need a 2nd. We have stockpiled 14 picks for the next 3 drafts with no real need to fill.
Life is good as a Jazz fan.

This could have been the summary for Burke his two summer league seasons (except the shooting percentage wasn't even that good!).

Here's the most recent rumination on the 4 pg status. Concludes what I concluded. Cotton and Neto competing for the third pg position. Seems like as good a chance as any that Cotton ends up in the D League again. Which none of his fans would want, understandably given the reviews at this stage. Since this is about the needs of the Jazz, and not the needs of Cotton, we go with the former in any and all cases. But I'd have to hope Cotton could move on, rather then spend more time in D League. He's 23 now. If the FO want Neto and Cotton competing, then why give Neto a guaranteed contract ahead of any competition? They signed Neto to be third pg. Aside from getting exposure, I don't see Cotton's audition up to this point doing him much good if he has to go back to D League....
I'd have to hope he'd get traded.
I just can't quite figure it out. I know they like Cotton to a degree, but it doesn't seem like there can really be a spot for Cotton. Makes my head hurt, lol...

If Philly wants to continue to suck, that trade may not be bad (I love me some Cotton, however.) The first few picks of the second round are pretty valuable. I want no part of their extra 2nd rounder owed to them from somewhere else though. . .

I think Cotton has better chance to be picked by a team on the waiver-wire and that's why I think the more likely one to be waived is Cooley. We can start with 5 bigs, send Cooley to our D-League team and if we ever need him because of injuries, we do the appropriate machinations with the roster if/whenever we happen to need it.

One way or another the roster for game-day needs to be cut down to 13. So one of the PGs would most probably be sent to the Stampede(be put on the inactive list), while still keeping his roster spot among the 15 registered players.

And trey isn't nearly as "fun to watch"
