Utah Trade Deadline Discussion

The Jazz are overwhelmingly expected to be sellers at the deadline, but I’m hoping that they get to be buyers as well.

I think they need one move that helps establish their future identity and can rally around, keep their draft pick and then be active in the draft and trade/free agent market this offseason.

Unless they get a major piece back for him (not a late or highly protected draft pick), they should keep Hood and team him up with Dante/Mitchell in a new backcourt that excludes Rubio.

My top targets would be Mirotic or Fournier. I think both guys fit what we need right now and would help the team start moving in a new direction.

Washington gets Burks and saves almost $4 million in this deal. They would be a minor move away from avoiding the luxury tax.

If that’s the best deal we can get, I could live with it. Getting another 1st would be semi-valuable for Burks, but I’m not sure there’s going to be much left on the board at that point. Feels more like a move to secure assets to move up in the draft to grab a DL target if they cut a deal like that.

Don’t love the idea of an extra year of Gortat though. Burks has value on the court. Jazz are fine with Ekpe behind Gobert if needed.

If a late first can be flipped for Mirotic, count me in. Otherwise, meh. And I doubt a pick in the 20's could be combined with something in the 10-14 range to jump into the top-7. There's a clear drop-off in talent and those teams are going to act accordingly.

Or three way with Chicago who gets the first and bad contract and jazz get Mirotic. That seems more likely to me.

But i would do the trade even if not. Burks and Royce for their first (which could get even better since they seem to be imploding a bit and gortat is decent) and gortat is a good deal for jazz.

I like Royce but he isn't important to the jazz besides filling out the bench. Gortat contact is big but he is a solid player and would allow us to move him for an asset in another deal and/or move udoh for an asset.

I don't think Chicago wants to pay Gortat but I see what you are getting at.

If we are shopping Burks and Hood, O'Neale and his contract are keepers. A good NBA team needs waves of wings. Without those 3, we have Mitchell and Ingles left.

I'm just telling you the truth. Teams are just posturing until the last few days of the deadline. Just how it works.

Factually speaking there is always significantly more chatter than action. Some years nothing happens. And most of what is said is posturing. I think the Jazz will make a move but it will not be a wholesale change out. And I still say we don't trade Hood and Burks.

Utah Jazz

The Jazz are said to be listening pretty aggressively to trade ideas involving some notable players. The name mentioned most is soon to be free agent big man Derrick Favors, although guards Alec Burks, Joe Johnson and even Rodney Hood are said to be available for the right return.

The narrative around the Jazz is they want to retool around big man Rudy Gobert and super rookie Donovan Mitchell and that the rest of the roster is open for discussion.

The Cavaliers have been linked to Favors as have the Chicago Bulls. Most league insiders see Bulls forward Nikola Mirotić landing in Utah, however, Bulls sources cautioned that while both sides have gotten pretty far down the road, nothing is close enough to label it likely or unlikely.

The Bulls are believed to want a first-round pick in a Mirotić deal, and that does not seem to be something the Jazz are open to.

For the Jazz, Johnson represents a huge ending contract. However, the prevailing thought in NBA circles is that Johnson stays past the deadline and it ultimate bought out.

The Jazz have the right combination of ending contracts and rookie scale players to be a big player at the deadline, especially if a notable player hits the market.

100% I don’t think he would have that kind of value around the league honestly, but I also want to retain him and think he’s exactly the kind of big wing we need. Just not sure nba GMs would think he would have first round value yet.
