What's new

Utah @ USC, Sat. 10/26 2:00pm MT, PAC-12 Networks

Re: Whitt being gone. What would the Ute fan expectation level for the next guy in line? Do you expect Utah to really open up the wallet and try to take shots at the Jon Grudens of the world? Do you expect to try and find a new up and coming Urban Meyer type and be in a better position to be able to keep him now that a little more $$$ is on the table? Something inbetween like a Rich Rod whose value drops because of a few mediocre years, but had some hot spurts in his coaching career here and there?

Before I answer the question, I would like to mention how much I love the fact of just how much Utah's basketball scheduling seems to really bother you. I don't know if you've ever been tasked with bringing a once major college basketball program back from the abyss, but it seems you know how to do it better than Krysko. Good for you.

On to the coaching question: Utah will never be in play for the Grudens of the world, so it's important that they know their limitations. I think the Urban Meyer example is probably their preferred method. A guy like the Northern Illinois coach (his name escapes me) is a great example. He's on the brink of getting NIU to its 2nd straight BCS appearance and obviously has some good buzz. If Utah got a guy like that and it was a success, they would now also have a better chance of keeping him long term considering their new conference affiliation, the fact that they now have a bigger checkbook to pay the HC as well as assistants, and the fact that Utah gives a good recruiter great chances of landing California and Texas talent.

I could see Utah being in play for a Rich Rod/Mike Leech type of guy as well.

How about the boise state coach..... I think he would be a great hire and is an amazing coach

I might get flamed for it, but I think Chris Peterson would be in play. I think this year has shown him how hard it's going to be to constantly reload at Boise. If the USC job goes to somebody else, I think there would be mutual interest if Utah is looking for a new HC.

That would definitely be a great hire if you guys were able to get Peterson. I wonder how much interest gauging universities do behind coaches' backs while they are still in the position. Because if I were Utah, and somehow Peterson could be had right now, I would make the Whitt exchange in a second. And you could probably get away with it without too much fan backlash at this point. But I don't necessarily think Whit should be gone yet either.

I hope USC gives Peterson a more serious look than it sounds like they are giving him. They need an offensive boost. And Jack Del Rio and Sarkisian seem like the top 2 guys right now. Although, I hope Jon Gruden ultimately has an USC epiphany soon too because I don't think he is available to anyone. That guy is mentioned for every job, and I'm sure boatloads of $$$$ are being offered to him, but he hasn't bit yet on anything.
