Utes 2011 Football Discussion

The Utes defense is most certainly not giving up that many points. A lot of those were scored by the other teams' offense and special teams.

LOL, it's not an excuse, it's pointing out that you were wrong. Utah does have a top notch defense. Pointing out how many points the other team has scored against Utah's offense and special teams doesn't mean the Ute defense is bad.

I don't know how many turnovers the Utes have in the last few games but it has to be near the worst in the NCAA.

5 turnovers against Washington. 5 turnovers against ASU. 4 turnovers against Cal. The only recent game in which Utah didn't turn the ball over at that rate (Pitt), they held the nations 2nd leading rusher to under 50 yards. I think Utah's defense is actually pretty good, they've just been the biggest victim of Utah's offensive futility.

Touting the average points given up in Utah's recent losses is pretty much a half-truth that lacks intellectual honesty. If Utah can improve upon their offensive problems in 2012, we may get a chance to see how good the Utah D is/can be. Lost of returning contributers coming back on that side of the ball.

LOL.

Calling your defense "top notch" is complete and utter intellectual dishonesty as well. Thanks for playing!

Of course your offense sucking like Jakes Hypes was playing QB for ya'll has taken its toll.

I just don't think your defense is still top notch. I see some holes in it... I'm not a huge fan of your DC either...

I think this year is a huge wakeup call for Utah. Their recruiting, especially on the offensive side of the ball, needs to improve dramatically. I'm not sooo sure that Norm's that "great" genius that he was touted to be. And I personally think the defensive' play calling is too conservative. You aren't USC or LSU who can sit in base defenses and rely on freaks of nature like clay Matthews to make plays. Where are the zone blitzes? A few years ago you had folks like Paul Kruger dropping back into coverage. Where are these play calls now? If they're there, I'm sure not seeing them. They're too few and far in between to make a difference.

This year, hopefully serves as a wake up call to BOTH teams. BYU and Utah both need to recognize that they're not in the MWC anymore. You cannot keep jackpotting around and expect to still compete for the top spot anymore.

Call me a hater, a homer, a cougar, Mormon, classless, whatever you want. Let the insults fly again.

No need to insult, I'll just tell you you're wrong.

It's already been pointed out that Utah has been turning the ball over like they were BYU in a big game. With that said, even with all those turnovers giving the opposing teams easy points, Utah is 35th in the nation in points allowed.

That absolutely is a top notch defense.

good stat that I wasn't aware of and should be worth consideration.

How do you feel about the DC? To me, it seems more conservative than in years past...

He's definitely more conservative than in years past, but I think he's better than last year.

Last year was only his second year as a DC, so it's expected that he will get better with time. He seems a whole lot better to me this year than last year (no Anderson though, that's for sure). So hopefully he can continue to improve. He doesn't seem flat out bad to me, he seems okay.

Chow, on the other hand, has been pretty bad. It's hard to judge him with the crappy QB situation and o-line that hasn't been great either. So I'm forced to not bitch too much about it. But at the same time, I want to see a little more than just run up the middle most of the time, occasionally run to the outside, and take a shot down the field every once in a while. I want to see some trick plays. It's way past time to open things up. Some misdirection, flea flickers, reverses, etc. Heck, lets even let Hays run the option with White.

The good news for the Utes is it's not like the Pac12 thought they'd be good initially. The Pac12 (and everyone else) knew the Utes would struggle and it's gonna take some time before they can put a legit team out there. This was known. The Utes sucking this year is only a surprise to blind homers.

So basically, any wins these first 2-3 years is just icing on the cake. Meanwhile, the Pac12 is laughing all the way to the bank with the Utes demographic bringing in big bucks along with the womens gymnastics team.

The Pac 12 is laughing all the way to the bank with the Utes winning all of the out of conference games. Especially beating crappy independent teams by 44 points on the road.

I agree with this, surprisingly.

So you think after the season we'll look back and think the Utes sucked this year (and would have sucked if Wynn stayed healthy)?

I think the Utes have lost their last game and finish with a respectable 8-4 record after an injury plagued season.

Considering that I had them at 7-5 going into the season, I can't disagree with him. I also don't know that I'd consider this season "injury plagued" and if they win out that their 5-4 conference record would be anything I would feel good about.
