Utes 2011 Football Discussion

Chase Hansen will not go on his mission...

some competition for Wynn. Hopefully moves Hays further down depth chart.

Damn, that's great news. Like Salty, I have also heard rumblings that Wynn needs his right shoulder re-done. If that's the case, he's done for good. I still think Travis Wilson is the guy but it certainly doesn't hurt having Hansen in the mix.

So it's the Sun Bowl for Utah vs Ga. Tech. I think Utah should be thanking it's lucky stars for this match-up. Boise would have destroyed them for the 2nd straight year in the Vegas Bowl and I don't think Utah could have hung with Baylor had they went to the Alamo Bowl.

With the Yellow Jackets, Utah gets an option team that is obviously extremely run-heavy. I think Utah's front 7 is good enough to match-up with the run and their Secondary is good enough to play them straight-up. It will also be a plus that most of Utah's defensive roster has a few years of prepping for Air Force under their belts. It's not as if this is their first experience with the option. Not only that, I don't think Utah will have to score many points to win and I expect Whit to have this team motivated coming off that horrible effort against Colorado.

All in all, the Sun Bowl isn't looking so bad.

So all the "Utes to the Vegas Bowl" talk was unfounded.

Utah should make a pretty nice and at the very least a respectable showing in the Sun Bowl.

Not bad for having 7 or 8 major season ending injuries and the worst offense we will probably ever see from a Ute team.

Reports are Notre Dame's Dayne Crist could be coming to Utah.

A senior leader like Crist is exactly the thing this team needs, can't really count on Wynn

Also super pumped for Travis Wilson.

I've read the Crist rumors as well. Sounds like it's down to San Diego State, Wisconson and Utah. While watching a ND game this year I was listening to the announcers go on about the fact that Crist is still so well thought of by NFL scouts that he'd probably be a mid-round pick in the upcoming NFL draft. IMO that would be a dream scenario for Utah. Crist would allow the 2 talented freshman to redshirt and if Wynn is healthy he can hold a clipboard for his final year @ Utah.

If Crist is serious about upping his draft status, Utah should be the choice. The WR corps will be excellent with Devonte Christopher, Dres Anderson and Baylor transfer Josh Gordon. Having John White behind him will only lessen the pressure and he'd have a pretty good defense as well. Not sure he gets the exposure he'd want at SDSU and while Wisconson is a Big 10 school, they're so run heavy you'd have to wonder if he'd be able to do much there to improve his position in the draft.

It would also be awesome to see Utah getting a transfer QB not named Heaps.

I honestly think Utah would have to be his first choice. San Diego State is probably a last choice. They're in a nobody conference that is about to fall apart with all the best teams leaving. San Diego State is also reportedly trying to leave and negotiating with the Big East (which itself is less than half a step above a nobody conference).

Wisconsin is in a big time conference, but they are a running team. Utah is also in a big time conference, but they are a passing team that is in desperate need of a QB. He's basically guaranteed the starting job, in one of the best QB conferences if not the single best QB conference. This is really a no brainer. If he comes back to school at all, Utah is the only team on that list who can provide exactly what he would be looking for. A guaranteed starting spot in a major conference, with a bunch of NFL caliber receivers, a very good RB, pretty good offensive line, an OC that has a history of making QBs look a lot better than they really are and even getting them Heisman awards, and possibly the best defense in the conference. Why would he choose San Diego State or Wisconsin over that?

Having said all of that, I don't care if he comes to Utah or not. I remember last year when Notre Dame was struggling with him as their starter, and then Notre Dame didn't lose another game all season after he got hurt. This year he flat out got benched. I just don't know if he is any better than Shreve/Hansen/Wilson. I guess with them being freshmen you don't know what to expect from them so it would be nice to have him around. But it's definitely not the end of the world if he doesn't come to Utah.

I think Crist not working out at ND had more to do with the fact that he was a pro-style QB recruited by Charlie Wiess and was thrown into a spread offense mid-stream by the Brian Kelly hiring. I'm not saying that he would be the be-all, end-all for Utah should he come here, but I don't think he was on the sideline at ND for lack of talent or ability. Sometimes a square peg meets a round hole and needs to move on.

^ Judging from comments by notre dame fans on ESPN they do believe this to be true and that he was given a raw deal by Kelly. Irish fans love this guy and think he was a good leader and has a great arm...Apparently there are a lot of big time schools(Florida now mentioned along with Stanford), after this guy. I just hope he loves Chow being our OC and sees the open QB position in the pac-12 as a great opportunity.
