Utes 2011 Football Discussion

I haven't seen Whit's quotes about promoting from within. With that being said, the reason Kyle was even talking with Chow last season was because he was looking for some references on guys with experience in the West Coast Offense. The decision to move away from the spread and into the West Coast was a very deliberate move by Kyle. Chow falling into his lap just sort of happened after the fact.

I also disagree that ARod did a good job in 2010. I already know you and I disagree on that, but I think ARod's offenses put up huge numbers against awful defenses and wet the bed as soon as they faced a defense in the top 30. Utah has now been recruiting pro-style QB's for the past year. It would be a horrible mistake IMO to flip-flop and go back to the spread after one year. It will make Utah look extremely unstable and could cause players like Travis Wilson to de-committ. So if Utah stays the course with the west coast, (as they should) it then raises the huge question of whether or not ARod is ready to run that offense after only a year of learning.

ARod is a spread guy, plain and simple. You don't abandon the pro style offense after 1 year and assuming you keep it, you certainly don't put a guy in charge of a Pac 12 offense who only has 1 year experience in that system.

Your statement that "ARod's offenses put up huge numbers against awful defenses and wet the bed as soon as they faced a defense in the top 30" is completely false.

Lets revisit...
Utah's offense crapped out against the top 2 defenses in the nation (TCU and Boise State). It also crapped out against the #19 defense (Notre Dame) in the horrible weather, on the road.

Utah put up 27 points against the #15 defense (Pitt), and put up 28 points against the #26 defense (Air Force) on the road.

So in short, Utah got shut down by the top 2 defenses in the nation. They also went on the road, in horrible weather, against the #19 defense in the nation and got shut down there too. They had no trouble moving the ball and scoring against anyone else, including some of the top defenses in the nation.

Salty, do you honestly believe that Boise St. had the 2nd best defense in the nation last year? Most of those stats were compiled against very horrible WAC competition. There were probably 7+ SEC schools that had better defenses yet ranked lower. The problem with clinging to stats to make your point is that with the wide varity of strength of schedules, you're going to get skewed stats.

I absolutely believe Boise State had one of the best defenses in the nation last year. I also believe they would have had a legitimate shot at the championship if their kicker didn't suck.

Playing the "weak conference" card doesn't fly. Boise State played the teams on their schedule, including several ranked teams.

You can say the stats don't mean anything. But there is no evidence to support your claim that Utah's offense stunk every time they faced a top 30 defense. There is plenty of evidence that says your statement was wrong.

I maintain that Utah's offense stunk against the top 2 defenses in the nation, and the 19th best defense in horrible weather. Utah's offense was very good against everyone else, including some other top defenses.

I would be happy to see Utah go back to an offense that only stinks against the top 2 defenses in the nation, or a top 20 defense in bad weather. That would be much better than what we saw this season.

Michigan win in the Sugar Bowl.... Beyond ugly but it is a win and back towards the top. Thank you Brady Hoke for bringing Michigan football back! Been a few rough years with the slime ball Rich Rod ignoring tradition and what Michigan football is about!!

What does this have to do with the Utes OC opening?

I just can't get on board with your line of thinking Salty. If you don't have a problem with ARod as OC, then you have to be in favor of 1 of the following:

-Utah ditching the pro style offense after only one season and all of the possible ramifications that would follow: possible recruits rethinking their committment, Utah looking like they're reaching for an identity which could give the image of instability and hurt future recruiting, etc.

or....

-Keeping the pro style offense and putting a spread guy in charge of it who only has one season experience working in that system.

Those are the 2 options we have if ARod is promoted back to OC. Period. I'm sorry, but neither option looks very good to me. IMO, I like the pro style offense, I just didn't like how Chow ran it. Back when Meyer brought the spread to Utah it was cutting edge and it gave Utah a leg up on the competition. Now, it seems like over half the damn schools in D1 run some variation of the spread. Teams prep for it several times a year. While it certainly can still be an effective offense, the days of suprising people with it are over.

I am not against the spread, and not against the pro style either. I am also not against some hybrid of the 2. I'm not against anything they want to run, as long as they can run it well.

I don't think any recruits are going to say, "I only came here because I expected to be running a pro style. If you're running a spread I am transferring!" If anyone would be upset about it, it would probably be a RB, or maybe a TE. I doubt the QB cares, doubt any linemen care, and can't imagine any receivers care.

My understanding of the whole situation was that the Utes were only changing to the pro style because Wynn totally sucked at running the ball (which spread QB's have to be good at). But now that Wynn probably won't be the starter next year, I don't think that's a big deal.

I haven't seen Chase Hansen a lot, but what little I have seen he has been a good runner. Obviously that doesn't mean he will be at the next level, but he's bigger and stronger than Wynn and doesn't totally **** his pants the way Wynn does when he is about to get hit.

In short: I don't care what formation Utah runs the most. I just want whatever they run to work and work well. I saw the spread work well for several years, even though the QB was by no means a good runner. I then saw the pro style totally stink this season, even though we had one of the best RBs in the Pac 12, several NFL caliber WRs, 2 all Pac 12 O lineman, and an OC who was supposedly a legend.

So if we go back to the spread, even with the same OC we had directing the spread last year, I won't complain about it. I think even you agree that last year's offense was WAY better than this year's offense. Even though we had better players on offense this year pretty much across the board (with the exception of Hays, but even there we had Wynn early in the season and the offense still stunk).

Pac 12 just released schedules for all teams. USC and Utah face off on in SLC on Thursday, October 4th. Both will be coming off byes. Can't wait.

Northern Colorado, Utah State, and BYU are the out of conference games. lol, we're really scheduling like a BCS team now.

Conference games are the same as this year, except in the other stadium.

All jokes aside, looking at that schedule I don't see how Utah loses more than 2 regular season games (if that). And if the offense gets itself together, Utah has a real shot at going undefeated next season (at least in the regular season). It's pretty early and all, but I bet even the haters will find a hard time going on record and predicting more than 2 of these games as losses:
