Voting 2020

The Thriller

I’m surprised that we haven’t discussed this yet. But voting! So this happened today in Wisconsin because Republicans in the state saw an opportunity to exploit low voter turnout. A judge was struggling for re-election. But because low turnout favors Republicans and the hardest hit areas by the virus are urban areas, they insisted on holding the election today. Trump even admitted it:

In an interview on “Fox & Friends,” Trump referenced proposals from Democrats in the coronavirus stimulus negotiations that would have vastly increased funding for absentee and vote-by-mail options. The final package included $400 million for the effort, which was far less than what Democrats had sought.

“The things they had in there were crazy,” Trump said. “They had things — levels of voting that, if you ever agreed to it, you’d never have a Republican elected in this country again.”

Here’s some videos of the lines in Wisconsin. The Republican Speaker PF the House telling people how safe it is:

Nothing screams, “it’s safe” like wearing a hazmat suit.
In Milwaukee, they had 5/180 polling stations open for their majority african American population:

what’s your opinion about ways to make voting easier? I mean, why shouldn’t we first of all? And what are some ideas? Some ideas I’ve heard kicked around are mail-in voting, weekend voting, and drive-thru voting. I personally have used mail-in voting to great success. However, I’ve heard that in Wisconsin, voters are waiting 3+ weeks to get their ballots. So it’s obviously ineffective if you can’t get mail-in ballots in a reasonable amount of time.

obviously, we shouldn’t have to choose between getting sick with a deadly virus to vote or staying safe at home. But with one party actively trying to suppress the vote, what would you like to see done so this November doesn’t become a *********** like Wisconsin? You know trump will tell his cult to vote (and won’t care how many die after). And you know that the poorest and most urbanized areas will be the places with the longest lines (and the most vulnerable to illness). So what can be done?

I posted this in the 2020 election thread. I did not see your thread. It belongs here. And when an American says “it can’t happen here”, he or she has their head up their ***.

Paul Krugman: American democracy may be dying.

“...what just happened in Wisconsin scares me more than either disease or depression. For it shows that one of our two major parties simply doesn’t believe in democracy. Authoritarian rule may be just around the corner.”

Voter suppression is just plain evil.

I think we need to pass laws to punish intentional acts of voter suppression equivalent to manslaughter.

Thousands of Wisconsin ballots could be thrown out.

Thousands, perhaps even tens of thousands, of Wisconsin voters may have their ballots tossed out for the most arbitrary of reasons: because the post office either did not place a postmark on their absentee ballot when it was mailed in, or because that postmark doesn’t have a date.

These problems appear to be widespread. As of Friday, for example, the Madison city clerk said that her office received over 8,000 absentee ballots. Of these ballots, 682 have no postmark. If similar patterns occur throughout the state, that means thousands or even tens of thousands of voters could have their ballots tossed out through no fault of their own.

A disaster. That said, Madison City is 78% white and 9% Asian so...

In addition to the primary, this was the main reason Republicans were concerned:

https://theintercept.com/2020/04/03/wisconsin-supreme-court-election/

AMID CALLS TO postpone the presidential primary on Tuesday because of the coronavirus pandemic, Wisconsin state officials have been reluctant to push their elections due to concerns over a key statewide race: an election for a state Supreme Court seat that has the potential to loosen conservatives’ grip on the judiciary.

Why does Trump want the postal service to fail? Because he doesn't profit from it?

I believe it’s because he thinks the Postal Service gives Amazon a break on rates, and Amazon is Jeff Bezos as far as Trump is concerned, and Bezos owns the Washington Post, a major critic of Trump. Maybe I’m overselling the point, but it often seems to come down to vindictiveness where Trump is concerned.

Also, conservative elements have long favored privatization of the Postal Service.

One problem the Postal Service faced was a law Congress passed in 2006, requiring the Postal Service to make yearly payments prefunding retiree health care benefits for the next 75 years. This would create the unusual situation of prefunding retiree health benefits for future employees not yet born, if I’m reading that right. This was crippling, coming at a time where first class mail is in steep decline. The Postal Service has expanded in the parcel portion of its business, but it is not making up for the loss of first class, and the prefunding requirement is not helping.
