What's new

Washington at Jazz Thread: Who gives a ****?

Hospital births are basically brand new in human history. Before that, we were obviously a species in peril.

as per usual you've completely missed the point. Different beliefs is absolutely fine, it's those who then very clearly imply that their way is somehow a superior experience and are insufferably smug about it that were being referred to.

the irony being that you're sounding equally smug.

"per usual"... lol. Gooood one.

I really despise couples who harp on about having had a "natural, drug free" birth blah blah .....

You sound totally un-smug, brough. I don't know what I was thinking. No irony here, dudes. DownUnder is one open-minded mother ****er.

EDIT: open-minded-****er-of-mothers-who-have-hospital births.

makes you wonder how human births were even possible............ for hundreds of thousands of years.

Albeit with alarmingly high (by today's standards)infant and mother mortality rates. There were no 'good old days' where it comes to childbirth.

My wife and I did a class prior to birth of our fist child. It was kind of fun and bonding experience, but when she went into labor, she was all about 'give me the damned epidural.' I'm not sure it made that much of a difference, but it did provide some memories.

Among our classmates were one couple, the guy giving very blue collar type vibes. On the first day, the instructor asked if we had any questions, and this guy raises his hand and asks, "can we bring beer?" Yep, good memories.

You are comparing modern hospital births to pre-historical birthing practices, which are very different from modern home birthing practices, so the argument is very weak.

Moreover, infant mortality (death before age 1) was ~20% (if your genealogy is like mine, it is chock full of infant deaths), now below 0.1%. Maternal mortality was ~0.1%, today ~0.002%. Species were not in peril since fertility rates were very high (taking a lot of shots on goal).

So there's not going to be one person in here (all men, btw) who's going to address how the hospital environment can lead to it's own serious problems?

And we're even going to have one dude apparently give the hospital full credit for the drop in infant mortality?

Gotta love the JFC. Narcotics all the way.

If you came into the argument making these points, I'm not sure you'd find any disagreement. You just came in from the angle of "ppl had birth before hospitals", which is obviously going to beget the response that it did.

With that said, of course there are numerous problems with giving birth to your child at the hospital.
