We can go over the cap to sign Tomic, right?

So lets say that we turn all of our D League dudes and a future pick into one player with a trade. Then we use the rest of our cap space to sign someone else until we are right at the cap. Can we then sign our draft picks (including Tomic) and go over the cap? Teams that are over the salary cap can sign their picks, correct?

Good question. I believe a team's cap number already includes holds for their 1st round picks as well as for unsigned FA's, until they are renounced or re-signed or sign with another team, For example, Sham Sports shows we'll have a cap hold of $3.4M for Evans. However, I'm not sure what the case would be with someone like Tomic, whose rights we already have, but who isn't included in any cap holds.

But do we want him????

I don't... sorry bro.

Who else would you rather have (that we can realistically get) to back up Gobert? Or, if you say Favors, then to be a backup PF? Can't have just Gobert, Favors and Booker. That's 32 mins from each and what if one is out? Also, I would argue (and CY hates me for this) that we really need some offense. AS much as I like Booker, he just doesn't provide sufficient outside shooting. Gobert/Favors is difficult enough to keep on the floor offensively. When Favors sits, we have two bigs who can only score from 5-10 ft.

I'd prefer to have a defensive center or a stretch 4 type player, but the problem I have with Tomic is he is neither. I just don't think he'll be all that great in the NBA considering his skill set.

It's my understanding that Utah will have to use cap room or an exception to sign Tomic. I'm still looking through Coon's faq for language to confirm, as most of what I've found is somewhat vague. Otherwise, the answer is yes, teams can go over the cap to sign their draft picks.

Utah needs to bolster their offense though, and Tomic can help with that. He could also be a decent trade chip. Utah might draft someone like the Tank or make a trade for a defensive/stretch big, but Tomic is probably better than anyone like that we'd pickup in FA. I also believe any trade Utah makes will address other positions. In other words, I think you may be setting your expectations a bit too high.

I'd rather have Frank the Tank than Tomic. He is much more versatile with his 3pt shooting.
