What's new

Welcome to 'Murica

Is this the medias fault? Of course not, but they have their role to play in all this.

Do we have a substantially different media environment from, for example, european countries with substantially lower gun violence? Did anybody say "the media" had ZERO role?

And nobody laid all the blame at the medias feet either...

besides, in spite of Trout's opinion, I really don't think media attention is much of a factor for most of these mass killers - I don't think their motivation for doing it is to get their 15 minutes of fame

plus, mass killings are only a small percentage of U.S. homicides so they shouldn't be the proxy for what is taking place cross the board

Agreed

I think the attention plays a part for some of them. But you are more than correct in that most homicides, even gun homicides, are not these mass shootings.

But they grab the headlines.

So, Trout, simple question: How many people would he have shot with a gun?

Yup, still have no idea what you're asking, so I'll just say "all of them are belong to him."

when you run out of insightful things to say, you can always run to that bastion of generalizing hogwash: blame "the media."

Well, one thing is an inanimate piece of metal, while the other is the beautification, celebration, and all-out worship of the former. Keep telling yourself that guns are to blame, you friggin' moron.

How many of these mass shootings at schools and theaters would have not happened if Colimbine hadn't happened, or Sandy Hook? Impossible question to answer, but it's fairly logical and likely to think that NONE is the correct answer. Law inforcement uses the term "copy cat" for a reason.

Can you please provide a link where I stated things so plainly/simply? thanks.

I'm not sure I understand your point. Are you saying they're more likely to occur at schools because of media attention?

There have also been plenty of mass shootings at other places like hospitals, office buildings, churches etc. I think it's more a case of the demographics of who's doing the shooting and what places they have associations to.
