What Galls Me

Hayward knew long ago. He was just waiting for Regis to ask, "Is that your final answer?"

I think that Hayward had originally decided he would leave Utah a year or more ago. That season when the Jazz missed the playoffs by a single game might have been the final straw in his mind. The Jazz then challenged that decision with the moves they made and the progress they made in the last season, but it wasn't quite enough. I'll explain below.

Here is the main reason Gordon left Utah, imo:

Gordon wants to be a top-tier player and wants to be viewed as a top-tier player. He sees himself that way, while the rest of the world doesn't quite. He wants to be more visible, on national TV more, so that people will stop underrating him as a player. This is especially important in the playoffs where every game is nationally televised and players earn their stripes. Winning an extra round in the Eastern Conference is important to build this perception, even if he never makes it to the NBA Finals. For a player who cares about his brand, being in a bigger TV market can make a big difference. I'm sure Kobe Bryant would have told him this when they worked out together (although it's obvious).

I think this is what tipped the scale. Whether Gordon is good enough to make this happen remains to be determined. He might have a bad game and get roasted by the media in Boston.

And the other reason, related to the first reason:

Gordon Hayward was a late addition to the All Star team last year. Now add a healthy Chris Paul, Paul George, Jimmy Butler and a surging Damian Lillard in the Western Conference, along with up-and-coming talent (not to mention his own teammate Rudy Gobert) and it's possible Hayward doesn't make the team in the next two years. That's important to him.

Going east gives him a better opportunity to reach his personal goals, regardless of team win totals. It's about what's best for Gordon.

Would Paul Millsap have become an All Star in the Western Conference? After Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom destroyed him in consecutive seasons, the Jazz were ready to let him walk.

He couldn't, as he needs two competing sides to get a max offer. That's how the game is played.

Yeah, the drama that played out, with 7th graders writing letters and people making videos, was just building Hayward's aura. It was part of his negotiating process, as he played all sides.

Jingles, probably. May have just rolled with Dante and saved some cash.

I think the reverse. They still make the trade for Rubio. Locks in a PG at reasonable price for 2 years. Maybe give Ingles slightly less? Maybe they have the time and money to also re-sign Hill?

Huh? Everyone knew Hayward was getting the max. He chose to stiff the Jazz and take a couple mil less over seasons 2-4 of his contract so his new team didn't have to relinquish anything. The only team he played was Utah, and a gave a courtesy visit to Miami when everyone inside and out of that organization knew he wasn't signing there.

Remember last year when Geltzeiler tweeted and went on 1280 and said Hayward wanted to go to Boston?
And the idiot 1280 schills said he was an idiot making stuff up, and in essence stuck their fingers in their ears, closed their eyes, and repeated to themselves "Hayward likes us, Hayward likes us, Hayward likes us."

Ugh, this past year has been the worst but it's over. The Jazz were stupid. Ok. Done. Learn from this.

This article is for reference purposes only. It's a year old - full of Geltzeiler's info on Hayward's wishes to go to Boston.

Now that we know a little more about GH's character, why would he help orchestrate a sign and trade to help the Jazz? He needed Boston to keep their assets to help fill out a roster after he takes a large % of their cap? A lot of lottery picks, Tatum and Brown, help ensure he'll get the supermax and still be competitive.

He has been self absorbed during this whole soap opera. I hope this is my last GH post and vote to have all future posts go to the General NBA forum because he is irrelevant now.

Jazz grabbed Rubio to further maximize Gobert. Rubio is a salve for whatever offensive woes Gobert still has. Rubio fits Gobert far better than Hill does.

Rubio is a good PG on a good contract. If Exum can beat out Rubio, then so be it. It would mean that Exum is really emerging.

As soon as Brad Stevens was made coach in the NBA, he had made up his mind to play for him given the opportunity. It has been years in the making. Why wait until the final year of your contract to get into shape and take it to the next level? It was a major sign to me he was leaving when he made that move in the off season of his final contract year rather than any of the years prior.

Hayward's love of the City and State was in full display when he signed the Hornets offer sheet years ago. He doesn't care about the city or the area. George Hill and Book were cool dudes. I think it says volumes that he made his agent deliver the bad news to the Jazz and Hayward and DL still haven't spoken on the phone. Total Dewsh.
