What next? 2014-15 Cap & Tax Space

There isn't a single max guy out there that would want Utah, nor is there a single guy that would be worth Utah giving max dollars to get them to come to Utah.

Utah has a choice to make this summer if they don't win the lottery:

Go all Minnesota/Milwaukee/other crappy team and overpay on crappy vets (Hayward included) and make a run at the 8th seed.

or

Tank another year.

That is where we stand as of right now. Utah needs to lose and they need to lose DESPERATELY.

I don't get all the anti-tank people. You could have one bad year, get a future HOF guy, and compete for titles, or remain bad for a long, long time. It looks like we have chosen the second option.

Too bad.

Here's to hoping Favors doesn't play another game this year.

And just how do you propose we tank another year? Trade Favors, Burke and Burks?
This season we've had Burke go down for 15 games, Favors miss a handful, Hayward miss a few. Gordon has had his worst year shooting-wise; Kanter's defense has been awful. Jazz have one of the worst coaches in the league. And yet, there are teams far worse than Utah.

Which is why we have become Minnesota.

Boston, Sacramento, Orlando and Philly all made big moves for the tank. We didn't. Because of that, we will be picking 10-16 for the next ten years.

We had better hope one of the GS picks is a home run...again.

So what move would you have made?

Philadelphia: I'll concede that one. Congrats to Philly for pinning all their hopes on Nerlens Noel, this year's picks and a bunch of second-rounders. They're all in on a big gamble. Do they become OKC or flounder like so many teams (Kings, Cavs, etc) who get high picks every year but never seem to improve much?

Sacramento: I wouldn't call trading for Gay earlier this season and then moving Thornton (to clear PT for McLemore) a big tank move for Sacramento. They're bad every season...no matter what they do.

Boston: traded away their big three before the season. Ok, fantastic. Let's get rid of Favors, Burke and Hayward for trash. Then overpay a couple of FA's to add to a top-3 pick. Definite championship.

Orlando: Only significant roster change from last year was losing Redick and gaining Oladipo. Tanking? Definitely. On purpose? Well, they've been bad for quite some time.

Utah: Umm, lets see...Millsap, Mo Williams, Al Jefferson, Randy Foye. Four of their top-5 scorers from last season. GONE! DeMarre Carroll. Decent bench player, part-time starter. Gone!

Added: T. Burke, Gobert (draft) Added: Garrett, Clark, Thomas (FA's). Added: R. Jefferson, A. Biedrins, B. Rush (trade for two firsts and two seconds).

I'd say the Jazz did far more to tank than a lot of teams. Unfortunately Favors, Burks, Burke and even Kanter and Hayward have just been too good. I'm really, really sorry that Alec and Trey weren't total busts. Had they been, maybe the Jazz would have been as bad as Milwaukee, Philly and Orlando.

And trades involving picks, cap space and other assets (Kanter?). There are different ways to improve the team. I'm sure if DL doesn't like the FA class in 2014, he could just do another 2013, albeit for less than $30M. Give a team some cap space in exchange for using our $16M. Pick up another future 1st. And then have space available in 2015.

This is what will happen. And the tank will go on for another year. This means three straight years with no playoffs and 4 out of 5 years with no playoffs. What a waste. We are the Timberwolves.

I don't think so

Since there is a salary floor, I think it likely we see Lindsey go after 1-2 very good FA's (or make trades involving our picks).

Interesting thought, but in my opinion this is very unlikely. More likely is similar to last offseason. I.e., the GS deal, accumulating assets in exchange for expiring contracts, and picking up a few filler vets with good attitude to fill in around new young core (old core, draft picks, Neto, plus or minus). Granted we do not have the same type of cap space so it will be a "mini" version of 2013 offseason.
