What should the Jazz do for a 3rd big man? And other 2013-2014 ideas.

You don't pass on young guys who look like future All Stars just because you have younger guys who might look like future All Stars in a few years. Pek could always be traded for "Kevin Martin, Jeremy Lamb, two first-round picks and a second-round pick.".

Pek is the real deal. He was a sure fire lottory pick if he didn't have that overseas contract. For that, he was a lock for 1st pick in the second round (because they could offer him a better deal than rookie scale two years later).

I haven't seen him play enough to have a good opinion. If he is an all star no question you do it, but is he restricted and wouldn't Minnesota just match?

I am stockpiling my patience. Barring a lopsided trade where we take someone to the cleaners that is desperate to free cap space, Millsap and Al will be allowed to expire. There is also a high probability that one re-signs. If a trade is not made, my preference would be to let both walk and sign Hickson, Landry etc.

It is also obvious that it is time to part with Earl and Tinsley. Maybe keep Tinsley as the third pg, can you believe he is the same age as Kobe! The more I think about Mo, the more indifferent I am. Imo we are not missing him much right now. If we do draft a pg, I would prefer that we not rely on an unknown as our starting pg. That need imo should be filled via trade or preferably free agency.

A rotation of Pek-Kanter-Favors for no less than 4 years sounds sexy as hell and I'd be willing to take a flyer overpaying Pek to give it a try.

I'd like to see the Jazz:

a) get a talented young point guard, like MCW, Marcus Smart or Trey Burke

b) get a talented wing scorer and bring Carroll off the bench

c) re-sign either Millsap or Al and have Kanter come off the bench; removing 1 PF solves our log-jam.

I would trade out one of our bigs at the trade deadline and happily drop in the standings so we can get a shot at either Burke, MCW, Porter, Smart, Bennett, Goodwin, etc. Let the Lakers make the playoffs and go out in the first round.

For the many-th time, this simply is not true. Yes, the Jazz will have to spend 90% of the cap on payroll, but they don't have to spend it on cap hit, and certainly don't have to spend it on longterm contracts. Besides, with the new LT rules coming into effect next season, extra cap space may be extremely valuable at next season's trade deadline, when underperforming teams over the LT threshold will be looking to dump players to preserve cash/flexibility. If the Jazz strike out on players they want in free agency, they should fill their roster with cheap shortterm players and wait. It also helps that the 2014 draft looks really good.

Not to mention the fact that if they strike out on getting Okur/Boozer type players, there are plenty of guys that would sign a 1-yr deal for $8-$10M if the Jazz truly need to spend up to 90% of the cap. Dropping Millsap and Boozer will give them some cap room, but Marvin will definitely opt in...there's no way he gets an offer for much more than the MLE. He may as well take his money for 1 season and hope he's better utilized next year when the Jazz have fewer players.

So if the Jazz are unable to find guys they really like, they could have Marvin Williams, Foye, and a couple of others on 1-yr expirings, perfect for making deals. As you mentioned, there may be some teams wanting to dump salaries in 2014.
