What to watch for this season

As the new season starts, here are a few things to watch for. We need to correct these things to improve as a team.

Harris lead the team last season (after D’Will departure) with 5.4 assist per game. Not what we need from a starting point guard. If he doesn’t improve, we need to look at the shooting guard or small forward to initiate the offense more. Or trade for a point guard that can distribute the ball better.

The offensive points per game for the Jazz was 99.4 (rank 14
[SUP]th[/SUP]). Will Corbin’s tweaks to the offense and Big Al’s passing out of double teams improves our offense?

The defensive points allowed per game by us was 101.3 (rank 19
[SUP]th[/SUP]). Hoping funnelling the ball base line helps with our rotations, helps with transition defence, protecting the 3 point line better and having Favors getting more playing time to protect the rim helps us improve here.

Offensive 3 pt. shooting for the Jazz was 34.6% (rank 20
[SUP]th[/SUP]). Hayward came on strong last season and shot well from there, will he be consistent? Burks worked hard on his 3 point shot during the lock-out and will need playing time to help us. If, and it is a big if, Millsap can earn a lot of playing time at the 3 position could help us improve as well. Did I hear right that Corbin put in some set plays for 3 pt. shots into the offense, if so maybe that will help us improve.

Other team’s 3 pt. shooting against us was 37.6% (rank 29
[SUP]th[/SUP]). On the bright side we can’t get much worse. Look to see if the Jazz double down on even the average bigs again this year, if so don’t look for much improvement.

In offensive rebounds per game we ranked 26
[SUP]th[/SUP]. This really needs to improve. Come on Favors and Kanter make us proud.

In defensive rebounding we ranked 14
[SUP]th[/SUP], or about average. With Millsap playing the 3 or being the sixth man we should have more size in the line-up to be able to rebound better, and Favors along with Kanter should be able to help this.

The last game of last year with so many players hurt our bench only scored 11 points and our starters averaged playing 36.95 minutes in the game. If Miles was not hitting (about 3 out of every 4 games), we had very poor bench scoring last year. Yes I know he started games as well.
With the compact schedule this year, we will need much better consistent scoring from our bench and for the injury bug not to bite us to hard. Not having AK will help us in the injury department.

Other areas that need improvement are:

Harris lead the team in turnovers with 2.9 per game against 5.4 assist (net gain 2.5), this is not winning basketball.

Nine of our current players averaged less than 1 steal a game. With Favors protecting the rim, we should be able to play the passing lanes more and increase our steals per game.

Hayward must be able to rebound better this year. Last year he averaged only 1.9 rebounds per game. Yes I know he got limited minutes in some games, but hopefully the added weight will help him.

I hope this research helps on what to look for this year and go Jazz.

Sorry about the bold print. I can't seem to get it to go to normal. Mods?

Points per game is a bad stat to look at. Points per possession is better.

Rebounds per game is a bad stat to look at. Rebounding percentage is better.

If memory serves, using these stats put the Jazz average to slightly above average offensively and bad defensively. I don't think they were terrible points per shot defensively, but they were in the bottom five in defensive rebounding percentage. I just looked. Third to last at 71.7% That means they gave up offensive rebounds on 28.3% of opponents' missed shots. That's OVER 1 of every 4 rebounds. The best teams were above 76%. Jazz were right around average in offensive rebounding.

There were encouraging rebound rates in the two preseason games. Kanter was especially good on the defensive glass.

If the Jazz improve only rebounding this year, I'd imagine their point differential would improve more than any other single element, gaining two to three points.
