Thoughts?

I reserve the right to change this based off of the free agency period.

So if my line positioning is close to correct then the Jazz would be looking at a top 10 pick pre-lottery.

Am I missing something?

I tried to rep, orange. Agree with most of that.

The worst record I can see the Jazz getting is 7th worst. Unless we have major injury problems.

For me it's all about depth for the Jazz. No depth = tank. I know we'd have a pretty exciting starting 5, but, those guys gotta sit sometime. Plus you have the inevitable injury here and there.

It's all about just not trying to win too fast. Don't go out and trade for a Ridnour. Don't sign a Reddick, Calderon, or Landry. Trade for Beans and RJeff and sign Foye and Carroll and call it a day.

Burke, Neto, Tinsley
Burks, Foye, Murphy
Hayward, Carroll, Richard Jefferson
Kanter, Evans, Williams
Favors, Gobert, Biedrins

That's 15 guys right there.

I don't think there is enough cohesion/complimentary play among the young core to win more than 35 games. I'll be surprised, and disappointed if we win more than 30. We are in a great position to find the athletic wing/franchise cornerstone of our future that the young core will play around. Just hope our guys don't play so well that we can't get that last missing piece.

Glad I'm not the only one a little down on Aaron Gordon. People say he MIGHT be the next Griffin--who is totally overrated. Then you throw in the tweener label on top of that and I'm not so excited.

His wingspan and reach already exceeds Griffin's, and he is still growing being 17. Athleticism simply off the charts. He might not be like Griffin at all, but the potential to be a great basketball player is there.

Celtics have only few legit players and scrubs with Rondo recovering and Lakers will be tanking hard as Kobe injured and Howard leaving. If Manu/Duncan/Pop choose to retire SAS will follow the suit. Don't see why Wizards won't be stealth tanking either should they start poorly again. Basically half of the teams from Minnesota, Portland, Pelicans, Toronto, Milwaukee may opt to tank should their season start badly or they suffer from major injuries. If Atlanta don't land Howard/CP3 they may choose to tank as well as they have only Horford, Lou Williams and Teague under contract among players worth mentioning and will be playing the same card the Jazz will be when trade deadline comes next spring.

As I mentioned already we may suck and still get to 35-40 wins range which will net us something like 10-14.

As mentioned before, the best chance the Jazz have to get a top 5 pick is to be really bad and then get lucky with the ping pong balls. The two guys I love are Wiggins and Parker. They fit a need too.

Yes the Lakers and possibly the Celtics will be in the mix but they still have some talent to where they will be in the mix to make the playoffs. Gasol, Nash,World, Kobe are not going to lose on purpose. Vet teams are less likely to tank because they want to win and they know that if they lose the new guy will be replace them. Besides FA hasn't happened yet so no one knows what team rosters will be so it is still hard to predict who is really going to suck. The annual bottom feeders are sick of being in the lotto and are trying to get out of it. I know if your team sucks then they suck.

On another note, the thing that people are forgetting is that our Core5 are all under 23 years old. It is way too early to determine their ceiling consider how little time Kanter, Burks and even Favors have gotten. I still think that Hayward is getting better and he has only been play consistent big minutes for the last year and a half. Maybe the Jazz have a couple All-stars in the making right under our noses.

Nevertheless a team needs depth too. Winning a championship is very hard and there are no guarantees but you have to have some luck along the way. Maybe the ping pong balls go are way like they did with Kanter. Maybe if the Core5 get to the Finals or WCF the Jazz can find the missing piece in FA.

This coming season should be a chance to play the young guys and try to find a deal in FA where the Jazz take on a bad contract and acquire a draft pick that might assist us in moving up or lead to a top 10 pick in 2014.I know most franchises are not going to give away a pick but the luxury tax penalty is a lot higher than it use to be. 2x for every 1 over. Some teams are going to be begging the Jazz to take on a bad contract.

Lastly, I know every one is excited about the 2014 draft, however no one knows after the first few guys if there are sure things. Look at Bazz he was rated #1 coming out of high school and he gets drafted 14th. No one out of Utah even heard about Damien Lillard and he ends up getting pick 6th and earns ROY. Perhaps the star the Jazz need is yet unknown in the draft or currently on our team or he is waiting in FA. I just think the Jazz if they play it smart have the best opportunity to build a championship caliber since S&M. I am excited and hopeful now I hope the Jazz front office doesn't screw it up by bring in average vets and playing them about our young guys.

Really exciting thread with good reads. But I wanna add a thing or two.

I still am not quite sure how the Mavericks won the title two years ago, but if every young player we have hit their ceiling, i suppose we could be better than that team was?

Totally disagree. The Mavs had a badass team. They had a franchise player, who's a matchup nightmare. They had 2 player, who elevate their play on another level in the 4th quarter with Jet and Dirk. I don't see that on the current Jazz roster. Maybe Trey Burke can be that 4th quarter guy...
They had Defense(Chandler, Marion, Stevenson, Kidd), outside shooting (Stevenson, Dirk, Jet, Kidd). Kidd was a true floor general and Barea providing huge sparks from the bench.

Glad I'm not the only one a little down on Aaron Gordon. People say he MIGHT be the next Griffin--who is totally overrated. Then you throw in the tweener label on top of that and I'm not so excited.

I wouldn't judge him that early and I won't. He's a full year younger than Randle for example...In the videos I have seen his shooting isn't broken. But not developed and consistent either yet. He knows he's got to expand his game and will probably work on it hard.
With his reported defensive presence worst case he's similar to Josh Smith. If he adds a midrange game he will be considered franchise player by some. I wouldn't be overly surprised either, given his age, if he stayed 2 years in college to headline a 2015 draft class, which PKM isn't exactly raving about.

I love the idea of Eric Maynor and Carroll. Hate Randy Foye. Best case the Jazz win 20 home games to keep the crowd happy, and lose all their road games...
About other tanking teams: I think Celtics and Hawks are full rebuild mode. I agree with the Bucks as stealth if they manage to keep either Ellis or Jennings. Else it's clear full tank for them too after grabbing Adetokunbo.
I think Raptors will be 6 seed.
Detroit has as good chances as Cleveland to get 8th seed. Cleveland has no defense. That is going to hurt them. Agree with Wiz as 7th seed.
In the West I see Suns and Jazz as the 2 tanking squads. At least I hope the Jazz tank. The Nuggets, Mavs, Rockets, Lakers and Grizzlies have huge question marks all over them. Lakers, Rockets and Mavs depend on the Dwight Howard situation. Memphis has reportedly considered shopping Z-Bo and other options. Then their changed coaching situation. Same for Denver. What's Javale doing as a starter? New coach? Other players? Trades?

As a conclusion I see the majority of tank squads in the east. And the east plays each other more often, so these tank squads will compete for losses. In the West there is less interest in tanking and more confidence in the talent levels on many squads. Thus I think the Jazz will have a good position to have a real awful record while playing okay basketball which would be close to a playoff spot in the east.

I agree with you. That is why I am hoping that the Jazz can still land another pick pre 20. It will give them a chance to gamble on one if they'd like and it will help build depth.

Just clearly speculating here as we don't know the rosters yet but I completely disagree about the Lakers. The only 1st round draft pick they have in the next 3 years is 2014 so if they need to rebuild it's now time to start. Their roster with Howard was swept in the first round which they reached due to Kobe's phenomenal play only. They are lottery without Dwight even if they do their best. Nash is dead and Pau is a broken toy. There is no incentive for them to make playoffs at all as it will just prolong agony. As of now 80% hey will tank hard and 20% they will pull out a magnificent Dwight trade.

Everybody is going to tank this year. In the East, we could very well see a team with 30-35 wins make the playoffs.

Would it be possible for the Jazz to S&T either Paul or Al (or Mo) for a high first round pick next year?

Okay, new question: Does ANYONE think with the team we currently have + whatever (realistic) free agents we could get, and plus draft picks that we would get, (assuming we were playing to win) can EVER win a title?
