When will the Trey Burke experiment end?

Stifle Tower

Punch Bowl Re-Filler
Another awful night for Trey. And this time Ronda (aka Trey's mom) can't deny it. She was there; she witnessed the carnage. Guess there is no other option but to play Trey a lot of minutes as Hood is hurt and the Jazz really have no 3rd PG. But how long can Quin keep Dante on the bench and not start him? Exum has clearly outplayed Trey the last 5 games. Burke has really only had one decent game, scoring 16 pts on 40% shooting and getting 7 assists at Dallas. It's been downhill since then.

If his current play continues I can see Quin starting to cut his minutes. He did it today, which was possibly due to Trey's foul troubles at the beginning, but as Exum kept playing good and having some nice defensive plays he kept him for the very first time on the court to finish the game in the clutch. If Trey's woes continue, I can see this happening again in the future - start Burke, let him play his way to the bench and keep Dante to finish the games when it feels like he's doing well and playing good defense. If that continues throughout the season I can't help but feel like at some point (possibly around all-star break) Dante might start some game.

The worst thing is that I am not sure that this would be in Dante's best interest. His body is still not ready for the physicality of it all...

With all that said, I really doubt Trey will keep playing this badly. He's playing much worse now than in his rookie season, which I think is an aberration.

I know this is probably an extreme comparison as Trey is way more talented than any of our past PG scrubs, but what if we have a Mcleod/Pilacio vs. rookie Deron situation? We tried to bring Deron along slowly that rookie year with the fear of throwing him into the fire too quickly. Obviously by the end of the year he started to mesh with the other key parts of the roster and then the following year they were clicking on all cylinders with room to grow.

Again not a good comparison as Trey is better than either of those scrubs, but if Trey is just a placeholder like Mcleod/Pilacio why not give the new Deron (Exum) the reigns sooner than later? Also Deron was obviously a more prepared player coming into the league with his 3 years at Illinois. All speculation here and I don't feel we should even consider making a change this early, but I have it in the back of my mind.

This is a bit of a tongue-in-cheek thread. Remember all the "when will..." threads from years past?
I don't have much faith left in Trey, but I don't think I'd switch starters just yet. The way it's headed now is towards an even split in minutes. Of course, Hood being out affects that a bit right now. But Dante definitely deserves all he can handle, which is likely around 24 mins. for now. And I do think QS will look to put Exum in to finish games, whether Burke is in foul trouble or not.

I don't see that as a good idea maybe having Trey start the game and Exum finish it. I really think Trey's game would suffer in those kind of circumstances. He's playing poorly right now, but we all know he's capable of more than this, we saw it plenty of times last year. I think it almost needs to be an all or nothing. If Quin wants and trusts Exum to be the guy to finish ball games, where it's starting quality players on the court in tough situations, then he sure as hell would be good enough to run with the starting 5 from the get go.

I understand Trey's parents put themselves in a public forum on Twitter, but that shouldn't have any bearing on anything. This thread is trash. Trey is obviously in a slump, but he's got the chance to turn it around and be an impact player for us. We will be incredibly tough to beat when he's in a groove, and this road trip could be the start of it...

So he played in 70 games last season and shot 38%/33%. But wait, he was a rookie and hit that clutch shot against Orlando. Just give him a chance.
So now he's 7 games in, his shooting has dropped to 33%/23% while turnovers are up and assists are down. But just give him a chance. We know he's a really good player. This has nothing to do with Trey's parents and everything to do about his on court performance. Since he's not exactly Rajon Rondo with shut-down defensive ability, he has to be better than average on offense. Right now he's not even slightly below average: he's one of the worst shooting PG's in the NBA. He's hurting the team with his terrible play.

You can't afford to have slumps when you are as bad at D as Burke. Even if he had a great offensive night it wouldn't have mattered because of how much he gave up on the other end of the court. I don't want starters that are even steven on their good nights and a huge minus on their bad ones.

And that's just it. His ONE good game, if you could call it that, was 16 pts on 40% shooting (so still below average for an NBA PG) and 7 assists on Oct. 30th. Since then he's had HIGHS of 4 assists a couple of times and not shot better than 33%! The game before his net scorching performance of 40%, he shot 38%.

Fortunately, I think QS has recognized the problem. With the exception of tonight (and I think you can attribute that to Hood's injury), Trey's minutes have declined each game (38, 34, 32, 31, 23, 27).

Kanter's O has been good lately but his defense has been bad. People want Kanter's head but Trey gets a pass even though he's been atrocious on both ends of the floor.

I am worried about his body holding up so I am not sure we should play him 30 plus, but I think an even split is necessary with whomever is playing best finishing games.

1. Why does he struggle so much? Firstly he is a shoot first guy. Selfish. Someone pointed out in the game thread Trey left the game with a sulky expression while the young Jazz were celebrating their first road victory this season. You don't have to be the hero, Trey. Just be happy your team got the W. The Jazz are trying to play unselfish basketball this year and you need to adjust, make the extra pass, share the ball and so on. 2. He has a high b-ball IQ and killer instinct. I bet he'll learn eventually and be an active and consistent part of this team. Give him some more time. 3. Dante cannot start now. It'd a big risk to take. Wait until he gets stronger, has more experience.
