What's new

Where is that pit bull thread when I need it?

i have seen dudes swimming with sharks and not get bit.
I have seen dude playing with alligators and crocodiles and come away just fine.

Same with tigers and lions etc.

Doesnt mean i would want a bunch of people in my neighborhood with those animals for pets.

Are all pits bad? No definately not.

Im a huge dog lover. But i think something should be done about pitbulls (i dont know what)
Like dutch said, alot of it has to do with the owners..... but as long as bad owners and pitbulls are drawn to one another we are gonna have problems.

Even pits with good owners have dogs that are better equipped to kill and injury other living things and even good owners sometimes lose control of thier dogs at times and cant always predict what thier dog is gonna do

If anyone does even a little research you can easily see a trend in the news articles. I have seen very few where they state "the owner of the pitbull was operating an illegal dog fighting ring and trained his dogs to eat children". Most often the phrases are "I don't know why Pooksie tried to eat that child, she is the most loving of my 8 pitbulls. She would never hurt a fly." I don't know how that jibes with the whole "only bad owners" thing when most of the reports are of a loving family pet gone rogue.

Will you respond to my comment about bad owners and pits being drawn to one another?
do you see this as a problem?

Oh sure, sorry. I do see it as a problem. Part of the appeal of the pitbull is its look and very muscular frame. The dog just feels cool. So certain elements of society that are all about the thug life are drawn to them and raise them as such. But that is hardly all owners.

Can pitbulls be dangerous? They clearly can as shown on the newsevery time there is an attack. Not every attack by other breeds is reported though. some of the breeds I just listed can do as much damage as a pitbull to a person.

But I do not see that as justification to ban them? If so then where do we draw the line at what dangerous things to ban?

Hyperbole.

But it begs the question, how many girls with faces ripped off is acceptable? 1 in 10,000 is just fine? 1 in a hundred thousand?

Not a single one is acceptable. But my issue is where is that line drawn? This same argument is used on gun control.

I have seen people seriosuly injured by rotweilers, german shepards, great danes and dobermans. Should we ban them to?

You are rare then.

Almost everyone knows of or has seen an incident involving a pitbull.

I have never seen, nor do i know anyone in my personal life to have been involved in an incident with a breed thats not a pitbull.

I take my dog to dogparks all the time and see rotts, german shephards, dobermans and all other breeds playing and having fun together.

I rarely see pits at the dog park because thier owners know better than to take thier dogs to a place where other dogs will be..... but one of the few times that there was a pit at my local dog park, there was an attack.

i take my dog for walks often..... twice he has been attacked by pits, never by another dog.

my cat was killed by a pit that had gotten out of thier owners yard and jumped my fence into my back yard.
It got ahold of my cat and killed it. (My wife was bit while trying to stop the attack. I was at work at the time. the dog later died from blood infection that my cat cause from scratching its face. My neighbors had to pay us 1800 dollars in vet fees from the vet trying to save our cat. The pits name was Karma lol)

Best cast that ever lived too. :-( she was my dogs best friend

Can do as much damage but are much less likely to.

The difference is a gun left alone with no one provoking it will not walk up to a baby carrier and kill the baby.

Maricella and the dog's owner say the attack came without warning and the dog never targeted any of the owner's children.

And that sounds like anything but a bad owner.

Perhaps "seen" was not the appropriate word or phrase. My mistake. I should have said "seen reports". I myself was attacked by a german sheppard.

I do not deny that pits have an increased ability to be violent. Just at what point do we draw the line on what we do and do not allow people to own? I am not sure that banning a breed of animal that is a common pet is something I want to support.

For me it is more about controling, or not controling, what others can and cannot do or own more than it is about pitbulls.

The biggest problem with pit bulls is that typically less than intelligent people are the ones who own them.

I dont know if they should be banned (maybe though)
But could they be regulated somehow?

Make the breeders have special liscenses and make it illegal to sell to felons or something?

I dont know the answer but as of now, pits seem to hurts lots of things more often than any other dog.

Im curious as to why someone chooses pitbull when getting a dog.
There are lots of breeds of dogs... why go with the pitbull?

Again, there are far too many stories that do not fit the "only bad owners" scenario.

I agree with this.
Why do those people choose then though?

Is it because they are cuddly and loving?
or is it due to thier reputation of being dangerous?
