What's new

Who are you??

A (adopted) Kiwi, eh? One of my great grandparents (my dad's maternal grandfather) is from Christchurch.

Wow, really?? That's cool man!! He must be from England? Most of the original settlers here in Christchurch are from there.

It's a great little city (dubbed the Garden City because people here really take pride in their gardens). Surrounded by mountains, guarded on 1 side by the sea, and another by the plains. It also has the infamous Avon River running through the city center...not to mention the Akaroa peninsula too... lots to see and do if you like nature.

You should really come and visit 1 day, may be in about 3-4 years time once the rebuild had finished after the recent earthquake. The city should be very interesting with a mix of old and new architectures.

I had no idea you live here

Well lived in Auckland for about 10 years, now I'm back here in Christchurch though. I do know about Kingsland, there used to be a nice chinese restaurant there also a Thai/Lao restaurant which had some nice raw shrimp.

What do you do in Auckland bro?

I Christchurch, New Zealand i

Do you find it odd that you lived in a place called Christchurch and didn't find Christ for about 30 years?

Also, I googled "Alpha Course" because I had no idea what it was and there seems to be a lot of Christian groups that hate it based on the front page results. I'll have to look into more, but just thought that was interesting.

Yes, I do find it really odd..... LOL... also if I hadn't moved back to Christchurch, I don't think I would have found Jesus. Life in Auckland was hectic, I was living in an apartment, working from 8am - 6pm weekdays... Weekends were spent at the pub drinking with friends or going out shopping with my girlfriend... It was filled with materialistic things...

After moving back here I had much more time to reflect on life and really question what it really is and what's most important in life... I wouldn't have time to read the Bible or even volunteer at church if I was in Auckland, life was just hectic... money money money...

====================================

Regarding the Alpha course, about 15million people have been through it... I think the best way to learn about it is to watch all the videos for yourself. There is a list here of the videos that we watch together each week and have discussions on:

[video]https://run.alpha.org/watch-alpha

The format is that we meet up once a week to have meals together (it's usually at the host's house) and after the meal we watch each week's video together (lasts about 40 min.). Afterwards we go into discussion time... so when I was an atheist I had lots of questions and I asked them all... the answers really surprised me and made me want to go back to learn more and ask more questions. Slowly, my doubts dissipated and I decided to give this "faith" thing a go and started praying... my journey really began from there.

It's better than just simply attending church because there is an opportunity to ask questions in a non-threatening environment. Everyone there was friendly and nobody judged you for who you are. You're simply there to "learn more".

Wow that's cool. I prefer Christchurch because the pace of life is a bit slower. You can drive all the way around Christchurch in about 40 min. From the fringe you can get into the city center in 15 min. Not much traffic. There is no motorway to deal with.

Even when I was with the big 4 firm, in the Christchurch office everyone finished up at 5pm. In Auckland it's more like 6pm. But somehow the same amount of work gets done. I found myself enjoying nature more as well. There's always a reserve next to your house wherever you live.

College bball usually you can find someone who uploads a whole game on the web so I usually just catch up with those games that way. That's how I followed Trey Burke last year.

Here is another thing about me I'll share. I have the perfect wife. Sweet Lord she is amazing.
